I bought a Timberland parka over 16 years ago in an outlet store.
Its rain and wind proof and I wear it every winter for going out with the dog.
Its really warm without being too bulky.

The newer versions of LE Stadium Squall are waterproof - mine is too (last season's stock)

hmsbismark · 24/09/2016 21:24

Second Callar's recommendation.. North Face Arctic parka worth every penny

QueenofLouisiana · 24/09/2016 22:20

I've had LE down coat and a Didriksons coat. The LE was lovely and warm, but I got soaked a few times because it really wasn't waterproof. The didriksons coat looks more utilitarian, but totally waterproof and amazingly warm (former rugby mum).

Grin

I was trying to figure out what my old coat is called - it was the precursor to the Merrell Ellenwood and not lined, but I cannot find it. It's clearly too old (but still going strong here).

I have a Didrikson that's just going into its third winter. Keeps me super warm and dry when visiting relatives in the far north of Scotland.

Lots of adjustment in the hood so that it stays up when it's a howling gale. Also you can cinch in the waist so you have a bit of shape.

The one I have is the Taylor but I think it's discontinued now but they have similar styles. Each Didrikson style has a warmth and waterproof rating so you can compare. Mine comes a couple of inches above the knee.

I did try Lands End but sent them back as they were quite shapeless.

I have a 66 North parka it's an Icelandic brand made for cold climates. Seen me through winter holidays to Sweden, The Baltics and NY.

bingohandjob · 25/09/2016 06:45

Didriksons parka - warm, waterproof and looks great. Use their official website to check warmth ratings.

Another vote for Lands End here,

Marmot Chelsea coat
North Face Arctic Parka

You might actually find them a bit too hot for this country though.

I have this. It's very warm, waterproof and actually has a bit of shape to it. I wore fairly light tops underneath it last year. Found jumpers underneath it too hot. No need for a scarf either. Comes in different colours

Uniqlo do down coats that are warm and look great too.

Paddingtonthebear · 25/09/2016 07:33

My old Merrell Haven coat was very warm and waterproof too. I prefer the Jack Wolfskin one though.

I tried the marmot and the north face but I am quite short and those big duvet style padded coats are a bit long and shapeless on me

Lands End

I love mine. It feels like On my way! earring a hug. Very clever design - you don't need to open the cost to get to your trouser pockets.

I don't know what I'll do if the coming winter is cold - I've put on weight, and the coat I live in for 3-4 months is now far too small!

LifeIsGoodish · 25/09/2016 08:12

Bloody autocorrect! It feels like I'm wearing a hug.

CFSKate · 25/09/2016 08:43

Land's End have 30% off today.
