Just emerging from the fug of having a child at home. Now that DS has started school I want to up my game a little and dress a bit better but need practical stuff for the school run. Any verdicts on these boots? www.jonesbootmaker.com/s/ladies/boots/fly-london-boots-rough-wear-boot-2630449233

I'd wear them with skinny jeans probably or a tunic and tights or leggings

The word mumsy for me in shoe/boot terms is:

too rounded a toe, with a sort of 'fly' sole, dark brown leather with a 'matching' brown leather bag that is in fact a different shade of brown to the boots!

Sorry! 😁

GlacindaTheTroll · 18/09/2016 17:28

Being a mother and being mumsy (in appearance) are surely quite different things?

If money is no object, then how about proper pirate boots (Vivienne Westwood)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/09/2016 17:54

But there is no such thing as 'mumsy' in appearance. If there was, every 'mum' would look exactly the same. It's a ridiculous concept.

GlacindaTheTroll · 18/09/2016 17:57

Only if you think all mothers look alike? Some look mumsy, others don't. Some people without DC look mumsy too. I see it as a linguistic accident of terminology, not a comment on fecundity.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/09/2016 18:02

It's lazy and stupid. I hate it.

In any case, everybody on this thread could put on the same pair of boots and wear them completely differently. If we look completely shit, it won't necessarily be the fault of the boots.

fruitatthebottom · 18/09/2016 19:08

I like those boots OP, they will be very versatile and would go with loads of different outfits. I also love the boots emgee has linked.

McWeedie · 18/09/2016 19:14

I have some Fly boots and in the wet the soles skid quite a bit so I can't wear them in the rain Confused check some reviews first, I didn't, if I had I would not have bought them

Buttwing · 18/09/2016 19:53

Sorry don't like them at all I really like the jury Geiger ones. Much much nicer. In my mind fly London are in a parr with sketchers.

Buttwing · 18/09/2016 19:53

Kurt who the hell is jury Geiger?!

My Fly boots leak water badly, even if they are very comfy. Fly boots plus skinny jeans or leggings are a bit of a mum uniform too.

Tbo I was searching on s&b for new winter boots. Am looking for waterproof this timeGrin

EddieStobbart · 18/09/2016 21:24

I think I have those boots - brown Fly ones that height with at least one buckle. Had them a while though and I don't recall paying anything like £130 so maybe they have updated the style a bit since then.

I think they look great (this is my idea of mumsy) but I agree that they are completely permeable. It's extraordinary - on at least one occasion I've felt like I would be better off in bare feet. I keep meaning to try some form of waterproofing but I'm not sure a product can have been invented that would keep the water out of the boots I have.

nilbyname · 18/09/2016 22:25

I apologise for the use of mumsy Blush

I used that word to denote a certain look of the school run that's quite uniform and functional. And not my taste. But then there you go, taste is wholly subjective and I'm sure I pounce around looking like a bit of a twat!

WhatamessIgotinto · 18/09/2016 22:41

I agree Remus, I detest the use of 'mumsy'. It's often used to scoff at someone's appearance, or in a bid to look down on someone, which is just not nice.

Nearlyadoctor · 19/09/2016 07:33

'Mum Uniform' I see 18 years old in skinny jeans and fly boots, do you think they went shopping and asked to buy a mum uniform? Why are people so hung up on 'mumsy' get over yourselves - rant over!

Floisme · 19/09/2016 09:11

I hate 'mumsy' too. I don't think words like this are an accident - they're sneering at people for being who they are. Words matter because they colour your thoughts. Why not find another? The English language is vast.

Boots also matter, particularly height. I think calf length is tricky because it draws the eye to the fattest point of your (lower) leg. I've got some myself and I can see they're not really flattering and I won't buy that length again. I like those clumpy, lace up Clarks ankle ones on the previous page. I think they're 'Orincoco Spice' and 'Thea Balmer'.

nilbyname · 19/09/2016 09:21

Use another word to denote my preference?

For those boots-
Unimaginative
Boring
Dull
Clumpy
Conservative
Ubiquitous
Uninspired
Average
Non sartorial
Functional

All of those words are negative. I think if you're asking for an opinion then you're fine to express it positively or negatively. But they are just my opinion. I've seen lots of people wearing those boots with leggings/skinny jeans and a top/tunic. Looks fine and groomed and put together.

But I'll refrain from using mumsy as I can see it is offensive to mum. Which I am, so I best ditch it!

I look like a mum I'm sure. But a ver ver stylish one Wink

mogloveseggs · 19/09/2016 09:30

Op I like them.

celeryisnotasuperfood · 19/09/2016 10:02

Love the Kurt geigers and uggs on this thread. Off to see if there are some that are not black...

lavenderpekins · 19/09/2016 10:04

Are you sure they're not wearing doc martens or nikes neatlyadoctor? I've never seen a teenager in flys..! 😂

lavenderpekins · 19/09/2016 10:11

you're right the English language is vast and I'm a mum but you see it's the fear of looking how my mother did in the 80s/90s. There were no forums then to help with style! That was mumsy..!! Always putting comfort above nice things! It's my hang up I know! 😁
