Which brands of trainers look best with bigger feet?

I'm looking for some casual trainers/plimsolls to wear with jeans. I've currently got canvas converse but I would like something suede. I have big feet - EU 42. Converse look better on me because the white toe part breaks up the shoe. I'd love some Adidas Gazelles but in the past (the late 90s!) when I have worn shoes like that they've not looked so good on my feet. What other brands could I look at?

I've noticed that shoes where the lacing starts closer to the toes tend to make the feet look smaller/shorter. I don't have any brand recommendations, but see blogger Does My Bum Look 40 and her Golden Goose sneakers (that are ridiculously expensive) for this effect.

I tired on some Stan Smiths the other day and they made my feet look very small. The lacing does start quite near the toe on these, so has the effect mentioned by murinea.

I've been wearing Adidas Superstars for about ten years now (not the same pair), I'm a 7.5 and they make my feet look shorter. If you're not a half size, there's an even bigger choice of styles.

I think new balance are quite a 'neat' style. I have size 7 feet and they look smaller in NB.

I have size 8 feet and I wear Sketchers trainers I have some in navy blue and they definitely make my feet look slightly less like canal boats.

Trainers with a wedge have a very shortening effect on the feet if you would consider them? I'm 5ft10 and abandoned wearing ash wedges in a size 5 after my family could not contain their hilarity that my feet looked more like little trotters.

Stan Smiths and Superga pumps.

Skechers and boys nike lites make my feet appear smaller. Im more a 6.5 but wide so often have to get a 7 just for the width. Although I did used to love a pair of airwalk or vans, feet always felt much smaller.

I must admit I always wear flare jeans to cover up a bit more though

Slip on Vans are my all time favourite trainers. They don't look too big at all. I have a pair of black leather converse that are ok too, but they're not that comfy.

I really should start shopping for winter boots now as if I leave it too long I'll never get anything!

A 42 is an 8. It drives me mad when shops label 41s as 8s, when in fact they are 7.5s.

I've just bought the clarks black sereneme aura and they are incredibly neat to my foot. Plus try are mega comfy.

Thanks everyone. I share the annoyance of 41s being labeled 8. Shoe shopping is incredibly difficult for me. I don't live near a big town or city with lots of shoe shops so I have to buy online. Sizing is always contradictory and I also have to be careful to buy styles that don't make me look like a golf club.

I found some Supergrass I like but they only go up to a size 7 where available. If I find an 8, is that equivalent to a 42? What about Vans? I quite like the old skool style but I'm worried they'll look massive all over in my size.

Superga's are big fitting - I had to go down a size so might be worth a try anyway? They'll be in European sizes.

Superga were the best for me. I am a small 8 or a 7.5 and have the size 7s which they say are a 41 euro. Did have 8s last year and they were slightly large.

I feel your pain in general though. I'd love to wear my skinnies and brogues but I look ridiculous!

Veja Espla are brilliant. I have a pair of white that I have just bought from Baukjen. Really pleased with them.

I agree with supergas, they are wider over the toe than converse so look better.

Yes, to the pp who said the ones where the laces go nearer your toes. I used to wear Simple trainers, but they've gone bust. Now I live mainly in converse, I have leather ones too.
Also get so peed of at places that sell 41s as 8s (Boundary Mill in Colne, I'm looking at you!) , I'm an 8/9 and this means I can't buy shoes at these shops as 41 is the highest they go.

Try ASOS for Supergas, and include the men's section in your search - much wider range of 42s. They often have them reduced in the outlet section, too. I wear a 42 and find them comfortably true to size, with no breaking-in required - a revelation after years of Converse, which I've now accepted are simply the wrong shape for my feet.
