help meee!! ive got a few greys coming and i think its time to start dyeing the old locks to cover em up! problem is, which home dye kit to use? and im too scared to do it because the colour i am now is not entirely "au naturally" me- basically i sprayed on sum of jerome russels gradual lightening spray ages ago and i m too scared to dye it myself incase it goes green or something!!can't afford to go the hairdressers every 6 weeks so ive got to do something myself, any hair people out there please give me a clue

I use Garnier Nutrisse when the situation gets really drastic - every three months or so - my hair is very dark brown/black so I use a shade lighter than my own hair colour. It usually looks OK.

anything from supermarket. - your previous highlighting wont turn it green.

tip:

to stop the dye staining your face. rub soap or washing up liquid around the edges of your face and neck.

use an old towel

foxtrot · 02/02/2007 14:03

If you are doing brown, pick a shade lighter than you think is right because trust me there is nothing worse than your DH telling you that you look like ozzy osbourne

bubblepop · 02/02/2007 14:08

custardo, how do you know it won't turn green? when i was a kid at high school i put 'sun in' on my hair for a while , then tried to dye it brown and it went green! never want to repeat the humiliation again!! mind you, that was a number of years ago...20 yrs ago to be precise, god am i that old?

i dunno - ive been grey since i was in my 20's i've dyed my hair so much its dead.

i am not a hairdresser its my presumption.

however your choices are

a) do it
b) dont do it
c) dont feed the kids and go to the hairdresser

wash it off - not rub it off. its only soap!

LemonTart · 02/02/2007 15:02

yeah - go grab a kit and be glad that you only have a few
I don?t think the lightener will be an issue either - esp. as it was ages ago!
Agree about a shade lighter than you are, will look less harsh and more natural. Lighter hair dyes tend to just colour the grey and not touch your own hair so looks better. I am a seasoned hair dye girl and have made the old "black crow" mistake before now!! Don?t do it! If you are a dark brown go for a medium or warm brown - no more unless you like the goth look.
Agree about the vaseline tip - is works well. Don?t forget to put some on your ears as well if you tie your hair back or they show - nothing worse than purply dyed ears!! Another trick is that those gloves never work 100% in keeping your fingers protected. I used to always end up with dye under my nails which make my fingers look dirty. My hairdresser friend told me to dig my fingernails into a bar of soap before putting on the gloves and this acts as a barrier. Worth doing if you wear no nailpolish or light colours..
Good luck
Oh - and buy a decent hair conditioner when you start to dye your hair, it will need a treat now and again. Also, grey hair is more porous so need to be looked after more carefully when drying, heat etc all more damaging

pah
I started going grey when I was 12!

if it is only a few hairs you can buy sachets of temporary dye that should be fine

Otherwise go for a low ammonia semi perm one in a box

maycontainstress · 02/02/2007 15:15

Oh yes, and make sure that the bottle top is on securely after all the shaking of fluids. I had a brown streak down my face for 3 days, I thought I'd done it!

TOTALLY agree about a shade lighter. My hair is brown/black but I look like crow if I use black hair dye, yuk.

peachygirl · 02/02/2007 15:17

I would second the garnier nutresse suggestion it's quite cheap but is good never seems too harsh. I've also had success with the herbal essences one too and what others hae said about deep conditioner the 3min miracle is great. They also do a leave in conditioner which is good too
