I used to be able to get this look right, now can't

Simple eyeliner, strong red lippy.

I now look overly made up. And I suspect I'm too old for it now. I used to have a pale, fine complexion.

I've more wrinkles and less fine texture now.

Or maybe it's because I've had quite a neutral face for about 15 years as there's been a lot of nude looks.

But I want this look. I think it looks classic but striking.

Help me please

I used to be able to get this look right, now can't

I can't even wear eye shadow at all now, I have false eye lashes and focus on my lips before they go all thin and rubbish too 😩

ginorwine · 06/09/2016 12:09

I wear that look sometimes
But my daughter says I look mad old lady 😞
I think it's because of the pale lip vibe
Have u changed your clothes or hair colour at all ?

Ornacia · 06/09/2016 12:10

Overly made up: what base are you wearing? And what do you mean by fine texture skin? Are you dry/normal/combo/oily?

So long as you keep the base light and dewy I don't see how you couldn't rock this look. Defined but not super strong brows, baby flicks (Lisa Eldridge has a great video for these) and a red lipstick that isn't too matte or drying would be my recommendation.

Also very light hand with bronzer/blusher to keep things simple and striking.

ginorwine · 06/09/2016 12:10

You say you used to have a pale fine complexion - ? What's changed ?

wowfudge · 06/09/2016 12:18

Have you tried grey mascara and eye liner and matte rather than pearlescent eyeshadow? The colour and texture of our skin changes as we get older so adapt what you wear to suit you as you are now. Plus the fashion now is very much emphasis on the eyes or the mouth rather than both being very strong. You could try a more pink toned lipstick too - the one you are wearing is orange based and looks too harsh a shade for you imo.

The only time I wear heavy/strong make up is on stage (in a choir), but I wear make up every day. I've toned down my lip colour, but still emphasise my eyes.

GeneralBobbit · 06/09/2016 12:37

I have normal skin. What's changed is age, I'm 25 years older since I wore that look.

So my skin is slightly rougher textured, slightly redder, more veiny and wrinkly, more obvious pores. I had a completely pale porcelain complexion at 20.

I wear Vitalumiere or Georgio Armani foundation now to get a smoother base, it's heavier ( probably medium coverage) - can't wear light and dewy now.

That's the most recent campaign face for Space Nk by the way, released today. So clearly that look is back Grin

Yes to wearing a Matt eyeshadow now. I think I need a skin coloured one, the ones I have are too white or too yellow. I need the equivalent of 'bone' Bobbi Brown. Which is too white for me now.

How about that look, but a softer eye colour rather than black? Could be grey, brown, purple, green or navy, and in a shadow rather than a felt pen type liner?

I am trying to rock deep berry lips, much to the disgust of my dcs.

wowfudge · 06/09/2016 13:45

I don't think Space NK are doing anyone any favours with that look, I'm afraid!

Pisssssedofff · 06/09/2016 14:14

It'll look great on an 18 year old, you know their target market - not - but then I guess is buying it looking shit perpetuates the myth that we NEED space NK to saves us 🙄

OlennasWimple · 06/09/2016 14:24

I wore something similar to a party recently. I don't normally wear lipstick, but thought I'd make an effort. DD said to me "Mummy, you look like a clown. A pretty clown, but a clown". Guess I didn't quite nail that look either...

burnishedsilver · 06/09/2016 14:31

Forget the eye shadow. Just do the liner (and maybe try grey or brown rather than black).
If you really want to use the eye shadow it has to be totally mat.

Backtoschoolyay · 06/09/2016 14:34

I've got a friend with short dark hair who looks fab with that look. I just look like a witch and find it accentuates my thin lips.

Backtoschoolyay · 06/09/2016 14:34

It helps if you have great skin.

SwedishEdith · 06/09/2016 14:36

What is that look? What is she actually wearing? You say "simple eyeliner, strong red lippy" but some of you are talking about bases and eye shadows as well. What do you wear now that is different from this look?

SwedishEdith · 06/09/2016 14:39

The model is not young though so think it's the cheekbones and hooded eyes thing.

baringan · 06/09/2016 14:41

I sort of do this. And I'm 50. Lots of mascara, a bit of eyeliner and dark pink lipstick. Can't do red anymore

singleandfabulous · 06/09/2016 14:43

I know exactly what you mean OP. Since I hit my forties I've had to re-think my make-up (and skin) completely.

To pull off that look you need to be young (or look young). It's quite dramatic and can look hard on older people.

I tend to focus on looking more natural now. I do more with my brows but only line the top of my lashes, not the bottom and I never wear black as it's too harsh (mousy blonde here). I don't use liquid/pen eyeliner either - always powder and I smudge it. I use Benefit Glow foundation and a glossy nude/pink lipstick too and cream blusher. I only ever powder my nose too, not the whole face.

I had trouble with my skin too so got that sorted (IPL/lasers/facials/filler, botox, RF, peels) and it made a huge difference, as did proper skin care.

Have a look at Lisa Eldridge's Youtube tutorials for women with mature skin.

budgetsbonus · 06/09/2016 14:46

i think the look is great and you probably are able to pull it off.

i read that free stylist magazine recently and it was a french edition. there was feature where they discussed bold lipstick and only mascara on eyes. personally i adore that look but my eyes need a bit of definition because they are a bit piggy.

therefore, im trying: slick of vaseline on lids for subtle definition/black mascara/brown eyeliner on water line and lower lashes to de-round my eyes/ matte deep fushia lips because red doesnt suit my yellow tinted teeth.

ceeveebee · 06/09/2016 14:47

I always used to wear dark red or plum lipstick with liquid liner. Am so used to nude lippy now that I feel like a man in drag when I dig out the strong lip colours. But agree you need perfect skin to pull this off. Could you go into space NK and ask them to do it for you so you can see what products they use?

Pisssssedofff · 06/09/2016 15:19

I bet that model's younger than you think

MitzyLeFrouf · 06/09/2016 15:30

Maybe try a sheer lip colour to start with. That will soften the look.

MitzyLeFrouf · 06/09/2016 15:35

I don't think that model's particularly young. Considering it's probably been extensively photoshopped and they still left some lines. Models under the age of 35 are usually made to look like foetuses
