If you are a waist size 30'' are you a 12 or 14?

Buying online I have been looking at the size guides and in nearly every instance a 12 is 29'' waist and a 14 is a 31'' waist.

So if you are a 30'' what do you go for?

Expect to size up. Both for your comfort and to avoid any obvious signs that clothes are digging in (often a bad look).

You mean waist measurement 30 inches I guess. As in, with a tape measure.

Clothes that say "waist 30 inches" are a whole different ballgame!

My waist measures a bit over 30 inches. Nearly all of my clothes are 10 or 12. A couple of tailored items that are fitted at the waist and inflexible are 14. I even have a skirt that is 16 but it's from a shop that's known for being weird with sizes (and I have another skirt from the same shop in a 12).

Generally what I "go for" is trying things on. Order from places that do free returns.

I would think a 12 generally but it also depends on other dimensions. I have a 29 inch waist but huge thighs so I often need a 14 on bottom.

I always thought 30" was a 12 but that might be out of date as the last time I bought jeans my waist measurement was in the early noughties! I would try on as pp said. I don't think I measure my waist correctly as mine always comes up quite small but I'm a 14/16. Think it's because I'm tall and jeans sit low on my waist which is wider than my actual waist. I just buy by dress size now.

im 29 inch waist and i wear a 12 in non stretch clothes. im 5 ft 8 in and 9 stone 7, so not ridiculously heavy but still ...

i bought a size 12 joules thick cotton pleated skirt with a fixed waistband (from ebay) in a 12 and it literally fell off me. unfortunately, i now have buy in 10 and 12 to see which is best.

how are you an 18 with a 29 inch waist laurie? to fit other places?

I'm a 30 inch waist with a strong hourglass, fit and flare works well for me but I struggle with trousers/shorts etc which is why I avoid them.

I have a 29/30" high waist and wear a 8/10 on top and 10/12/14 on the bottom.

Jeans are definitely a try on garment!

I'm 30 inch - next 10 trousers and jeans - or buy 30/30 Levi's - but 12 in Dorothy Perkins - really depends on the fit.

DD tried in 5 pairs on in river island 3 in Dorothy Perkins and brought them in new look - really is a difficult one!

I have a 30 waist now (27 pre preg). I wear a 10 or 12.

The waist size on jeans is based on men's sizing.
A 26 waist is about an eight, but you would expect your waist to measure about 24 - 25
28 a 10
30 a 12
32 a 14, but you expect your actual waist to measure 30ish

Sizes have become a bit random in recent years, check a 1960's sewing pattern and weep.

Aaaaah pestilence that makes sense! When I measure my waist it always comes up smaller than the jeans I need iyswim.

I have a 31" waist (although haven't measured it recently) and am generally a size 14 except in Sainsburys where I am a 12 or some high end brands like Max Mara where I am a 16.

I usually opt for a 12 and a 27 in jeans (Gap/Uniqlo) but my actual waist is definitely not that

I have a 27 inch waist and buy a size 10 in bottoms/skirts,a size 12 in dresses due to broad shoulders and bust size, and 28 in jeans.
I'm 5ft 7 and weigh 145 pounds.
I used to have a 24 inch waist before kids and wore a size 8 20 odd years ago.

I had a 30" waist and wore a size 12. I now have a 28" waist and still wear a size 12

Crikey, I was a 14 with a 26 inch waist in 1987 - my wedding dress. I measured it the other day.

Needless to say it does not go near me now.
