I was in New Look yesterday and teetered ont he brink of buying a rather fabulous smock dress thing and leggings.
NOW you see
I am not in the first flush of youth (37)
I am also a size 12/14, legs not bad but not skinny
will I look utterly ridiculous? or what?
TIA

Oh, go for it. This is the whole point of not being a lawyer any more, innit?

that sound good to me

MrsBadger · 24/01/2007 15:48

try the smock on
if the slightest hint of bell-tent perched on a pole then avoid, otheriwse go reight ahead

A-line things that flare from the bust make me look a most peculiar shape as I am petite of ribcage and small of nork but large of hip and arse - can't remember if you are similar.

I like things with a Waist that at least make my middle look smaller than my chest - the knitted ones that cling a bit and / or can have a belt look better.

I am large of nork and curvy of hip and thigh but I go in at the middle.
bit flabby at the front at the mo but that is by the by.
I must try on without children I think, without distractions....

yep, that kind of thing.
I do have some nice knee length boots.
I don't get cold, really. I don't own a jumper.

I saw someone at a wedding this w/e, 40ish, v trim, in a tightish dress, footless tights and platform heels.
She looked amazing. Except when she staggered on the gravel.

fishie · 24/01/2007 15:55

how long is this smock? i could not wear anythign like this but have wondered about how people do leggings with boots, could just as well be thick tights and would prob be comfier.

harpsichordcarrier · 24/01/2007 15:57

I think foot less tights\leggings with boots and thick socks would be v cosy.
the smock must be JUST the right length though I suspect

ah yes, fcuk one may I think be good shape for hourglass, am liking the neckline. Too many 'smocks' have necks too high (causing Hattie Jacques-style Matron Bosom)

I'd also avoid anything that could be mistaken for maternitywear (Topshop is a huge culprit - all those ones with gathered bustlines) and keep the silhouette kind of trim and 60s and Mary Quantish rather than hippily floating.

Kneehigh boots def good.

harpsichordcarrier · 24/01/2007 19:46

ah bless you with your "hourglass" nomenclature

I love this style and have loads of versions of it.

With shorter smocks/tunics I wear leggings rather than tights - can get away with much more that way!

I have a lush grey knitted one and just bouht a gorgeous linen one with boat neck and deep front pockets.

lissielou · 27/01/2007 09:15

see, im a size 8 and 5"2 and i look ridiculous in these combos. just swamped.

loving the shock/jeans look tho
