never heard that you cant wear nail varnish during pregnancy.

Piffle · 20/01/2007 18:09

I've always pianted my toenails during pregnancy, well dp has once I lose the ability to reach...
Never heard anything otherwise
I bite my fingernails though so no use on that front

CODNoMore · 20/01/2007 18:10

oh fgs why not

DizzyBint · 20/01/2007 18:12

i wore it on my toes. all came off in the birth pool.

redbullandbump · 20/01/2007 18:13

when i was pregnant with ds my midwife told me i shouldnt wear it as all the chemicals in it can travel through the blood stream and cross over to the placenta, just searched about it and found some american stuff but nothing in the uk about it.

it is fine

no problem at all

unless you are having an elective c,s, where you will have to remove toe & finger nail polish before hand

lulumama · 20/01/2007 18:14

really redbull...the nail varnish seeps through your nails, which are dead and non absorbent, into your fingers and then into the blood stream and placenta !!!!!!! goodness....seems quite doubtful

i had painted toes and fingers throughout both pregnancies and not one midwife or doctor uttered a word!

NbgsYellowFeathers · 20/01/2007 18:14

I wouldnt have thought that nail varnish could be absorbed through nails.
Skin yes but not nails.

redbullandbump · 20/01/2007 18:17

here is some info

I've never heard anyone say it shouldn't be used.

I had a pedicure just before going into labour with dd1 (not implying any causal connection). The varnish had to be removed in hospital, though, because I had a caesarean.

CODNoMore · 20/01/2007 18:17

welld ont if you dont want to but i think tis a tenuous link

NbgsYellowFeathers · 20/01/2007 18:18

The best thing you can do if your worried is to not wear it at all but I imagine millions and millions of woman around the world will have worn nail polish in pregnancy and whilst TTC and had no problems.

McDreamy · 20/01/2007 18:20

mmm no real evidence then!

melpomene · 20/01/2007 18:20

cross posted there. agree with lulumama.

lulumama · 20/01/2007 18:20

i think you could live in a bubble when pregnant, and not eat or drink or do anything contra indicated, and still worry about something! I think that it is a miniscule risk, miniscule, IMHO, as i said, i wore nail polish in both pregnancies.....the internet site answering the question has to err on the side of caution,...i think you are ok TBH, but if it makes you uncomfortable, don;t wear it !

Blondilocks · 20/01/2007 18:40

I wore it when I was pregnant.

I have read that it is bad for your nails if you don't look after them or wear it all the time , but there was no mention of it in relation to pregnancy.

satine · 20/01/2007 19:02

You will go mad if you worry about things like this. I reckon you will absorb far more chemicals just cleaning your bathroom, or walking down an urban street, or eating food that has been wrapped in cling film etc etc etc. And your body deals perfectly well with all those things.

Honestly, as long as you're not mainlining class A drugs, downing a bottle of Jack Daniels at a time or eating handfuls of raw shellfish for a laugh, your body will keep your baby safe. Please try not to stress yourself. It's bloody hard enough to feel attractive when you're pregnant - I'd say paint your nails, have your hair done and try not to worry!!
