Layering - is there a "secret" formula?

I'm a pretty basic jeans and a tee shirt kind of a girl. But I love the layered look. I've just bought a v-neck silky Jigsaw dress in the sale, it needs something under it, and I wonder about the polo neck and boots look. But how do I pull it off? Tried just now but look like somebody's mother (which I am, but it's not the point, is it)

So what do you have to do to make it work?

TIA

Have you tried putting something over it instead?
Mavbe a vest or tightish cardigan and belt.

crumbs · 19/01/2007 19:05

no, haven't tried, but will. needs something under it too though as the neck is very very low and my bras are very very grey

do you have a link to the dress?

JackieNo · 19/01/2007 20:17

I suspect that whatever goes underneath needs to be finer, and thinner than what goes on top. which could be difficult with a silky dress. How about a camisole underneath? But that wouldn't cover your arms.

JackieNo · 19/01/2007 20:18

Yes - ggirl's suggestion of a cardigan and belt over the top, combined with a camisole/vest(!) underneath might work.

Cod recommended this wrap cardigan to me. I'm wearing one right now and I think it would go over a dress nicely.

Thanks - some good ideas to start me off. Will have a trying on session soon. Have lots of cami tops, just not sure if I have one the right colour. Not sure about cardis either. This could turn into one of those times when a bargain ends up costing a fortune!

No link, unfortunately, but it's a fairly standard Jigsaw pattern, so I'll have another scout around and see if I can find a similar one. Off with my glass of wine to take up residence in front of the box now, but back later.

The wrap one I linked to looks good over a long vest with jeans too

Bucketsofdynomite · 20/01/2007 16:40

You need to invest in some stretchy vest tops, making sure they are long enough to cover your waist. Also, get some colourful bras for the summer to intentionally show the straps when wearing under layers. I've got a v-neck front and back stretchy jumper that shows straps but covers up everything else.

danceswithnewboots · 20/01/2007 16:44

Ok, so where for the stretchy vest tops that cover your waist? Mine always seem to sit on my waist emphasising my giant stomach!

noddyholder · 20/01/2007 16:47

Fine fabrics/knits and intersting colours look great layered Nothing too bulky and not really good if bigger than a 16

SoupDragon · 20/01/2007 18:13

H&M vests are nice and long - at least they were last year.

CODNoMore · 20/01/2007 18:16

ditto gap

not m and s
tehy shrink
also modal is a great fabric - its cottony but deosnt cling tot he layer below

aslo you need smooth bras

Bucketsofdynomite · 21/01/2007 15:06

Dorothy Perkins tall section?
Bravado bras site has nice vests for the busty lady, I'm assuming they'd factor in length when designing.
Try a search on Ebay for vests with the keyword 'long' (might find a Long Tall Sally one cheap.)
Also I've got a stretchy cotton minidress (bought from Charity shop and used when pg!) that I wear over dreams and under a ballerina cardi. Skirt must be straight though, not flared or you'll look bizarre.

mousiemousie · 27/01/2007 19:00

over dreams?
