loads of foundation, and false eyelashes??? why so much. I don't get it

Ok I'm in my 30's. I love makeup always have but why are people wearing so much. I just see an advert from a makeup artist. I mean she looked great but there was
Primer
Foundation,
Enhancer,
Blush
Eyeliner
Eye shadower
Eyebrows
Mascara
Defining foundation (eyes, nose cheeks and forehead)
False eyelashes
Lip liner
Lip gloss

She looked so unnatural she really looked like someone else by the time she finished

And it was loads. I mean loads.

Do men really like that look. Have I been doing it wrong all these years, I wear foundation, blush, eyeshadow a bit of mascara and lippy.

Maybe she likes that look, and doesn't give a stuff what men like?

Also, she's part of the makeup industry, not the not-wearing makeup industry.

What has it got to do with whether men like that look? The person who puts all the makeup obviously does! Horses for courses. Trend nowadays is for massive eyebrows and eyelashes. Up to you, where what you are happy with.

Another one who's a little puzzled as to why men liking that look is the issue.

I mean, some will, some won't. I wear makeup for me and I've never worn it for my dp, who is a woman, so maybe I can't comment Seriously though, when I was with men, I wore what clothes, makeup I wanted and that was that.

What I mean is.... Is it possible to wear too much that it makes you look like your wearing loads of makeup. I thought makeup was to enhance your looks. Not make you look like someone else.

I don't think it matters. Some people like to use makeup to make themselves look better but still natural, others like to use it more obviously. If it makes someone feel good wearing it that's a good thing.

I don't think I look like I'm wearing loads of makeup and I don't look like a different person (unless you count not looking like I haven't slept in a week) but I reckon in a list it'll look like a lot:

Primer
Foundation
Concealer for spots
Concealer for under eyes
Blusher
Eyeliner
Eyeshadow - sometimes more than one
Mascara

Who gives a shit if men like that look?

Who gives a shit if you, or I, or anyone likes that look?

Make up is whatever the wearer wants it to be- stop fretting

I'd say if she's a make up artist, sending you an advert - for either the products used, or her services - then obviously she's going to use a lot....whether it's to demonstrate what she's using, or her skill in applying it.
It may well not be what she wears when she's "off duty", but regardless, I don't think her first thought would be about it's attractiveness to men, as I don't suppose they're likely to be her main customers.

Depends what each person wants to wear
On a standard day I wear
Primer, concealer, foundation, highlight, blush, powder
3 or 4 eyeshadows, gel liner, pencil liner, mascara
Eyebrow pencil, eyebrow gel

It doesn't look much!

I saw two heavily contoured women at the bus stop recently. They looked very peculiar, the brown bits were quite a grey-brown and didn't match the backs of their necks (hair up in buns). And the makeup looked like the sort of stuff that is used on stage, great under bright lights from the cheap seats but very odd up close.
But they were young and happy, so all is fine I guess.

That's the whole point for some people with make up, it's changing the shape and look of your cheeks, eyes, nose etc. Some people prefer a more natural look because they may be happier with their features. Each to their own.

Tonight I'm going out and have on foundation, bronzer to gently contour, blusher, various eye shadows, mascara, eyeliner, lipstick, powder, and a shimmer. And this for a very natural look. I have naturally thick eyebrows but would do those if I needed to.

Go to any Benefit Counter and they will give you a clown makeover!

They try to use as many products as possible. I'm sure I weighed a stone heavier afterwards! I was also bright orange as they are clueless to what shade you need!

Too much does look odd to me. I don't live in the Uk but when I come home for a visit it is a shock to the system. It almost as though some people are wearing make up for photos only.

Bad contouring, too heavy foundation and massive fake eyelashes. Yikes.

I think everyone's just going to jump on the fact that you mentioned looking attractive to men op.

I don't like the heavily contoured look that's in at the moment. I think if done well it can look good but in harsh daylight, applied by somebody who isn't a make up artist it usually looks terrible.

I wear make up every day, for me I just use it to even out my skin tone and enhance my eyes.

I saw a photo of a friend who had been for a professional makeover recently. She had been contoured and she honestly looked like a different person.

The current look reminds me of the 80s New Romantic sculpting (which I was guilty of at the time) mixed with scary clown. I have no idea why people like it as it looks weird and comical to me, but I guess if all your peers are doing it you get used to it.

I think the attractiveness to men of this look is an interesting question. To me, the very contoured and made up look, while it can be attractive, seems like a very porn-influenced look. So I would actively not want to look like that. Younger women might see it as a more natural or standard look, perhaps. I think it's a shame if women feel they have to spend loads of time and cash to look acceptable. Having said all that, it takes a lot longer and a lot more makeup these days to get me looking like im alive, awake, etc!

It's all designed to sell you stuff. Foundation, lippy, blusher and mascara isn't going to make the make up companies rich.

Agree she is probably just trying to sell you as much as possible. The message being that you need all of these items to look a certain way. Or, being less cynical, she wants to show what you can do with each item and show her skills.

Re attractiveness to partners or potential partners; much as I'd love to say I'm above all that and that it doesn't matter, it does a little to me at least. I like my DH to think I look attractive. I'm not saying I dress for him or that I'd choose clothes / make up he likes over what I like and yes I'm sure I could wear any amount of make up and it wouldn't change how he feels about me etc etc but still.

Fwiw I think most people prefer a more natural look but then I'm sure plenty don't.

If she's a make up artist she's going to wear everything to show off the work she can do.
Not sure where you were going with the men thing, I'm sure she isn't doing it "for men" make up is part of her job.
Interesting though because I have been thinking a lot about this myself lately (make up and men's preferences/opinions) I think due to moving to a northern city from the midlands I've noticed a lot of women go for the clown Barbie doll type look .. I think previous poster was right re porn, actors will presumably wear certain types of make up ( esp contouring) so that the light hits their faces In a certain way, to make their eyes look bigger (eyelashes) and the like .. Young girls think this is the norm, men love porn and they want to "fit in"
I also think it's different in other countries, I feel more comfortable and not "judged" women don't generally go for the heavy make up look outside the uk (I wear light make up myself)

followyourart ever been to holland? My Dutch sister-in-law looked like a Christmas tree most of the time, teenagers wear tonnes. But god help the person who'd tell a Dutch woman she was doing it for a man!
