Breaking in dr martens

I've got a beautiful pair of red floral velvet docs. I've never worn them properly before but just walked home from the school in them. Bloody hell my heels are in pieces and I looked pissed staggering home. Is this normal, is there a knack to it? More importantly what is best to buy to put on the bleeding heels. All I had in the house was looney tunes plasters the really thin type that you peel the paper off the top of.

They are beautiful and look stunning on. I'm going to wear them for short bursts and bring a pair of slip ons in my bag for when it gets too much.

Thanks for the advice Smile I will let you all know if it gets better.
