Dresses - high waist seams driving me mad!

Hello

Is it just me or are waist seams on dresses nowadays all too high? I.e. About 2inches above the natural smallest part of the waist?

If a one knows of anywhere completely avoiding this daft trend please let me know and I'll spend my money there!

I'm only 5ft 4" and certainly not long in the body.

Anyone else not like the feeling of a waist band in the wrong pace?

I'm 5'11...can you feel my pain?

I wear midi tube dresses / bodycon styles or shift dresses.

Skater styles and anything 'waisted' is always wrong on me. Makes me look like tits on a stick or 5 months pregnant.

Mercy would you wear 'fit and flare' styles if the waist band was right though? Also have you noticed this as a recent (last year or so) phenomenon?

Driving me nuts so I can only imagine how anyone taller might feel!

I have no idea how to get feedback like this to those churning out the daft things.

I would like to add a special mention for Boden, who, in their tall range, seems to lengthen the bottom hem rather than lengthening the body.

dresses are always too high waisted and too short.

winds me up that there is a petite range but not a tall range in so many shops. (and if there is it is longer length, not re-proportioned)

I'm glad it's not just me! I thought it was because I'm quite large-chested and it was taking up too much material in the top half and pulling the hem up. But even when I've purposely bought dresses too big, they still make me look pregnant because the waist is right under my boobs.

FanjoBean it's definitely not just you. I'm not large chested in any way and these dresses make me feel a bit 'busty'.

I hate this too. So many waists land on my ribs! I'm a long bodied 5'6 but not exactly a giant. It's really annoying. I have spent a lot of time and effort over the years to trim my waist through gym work and high waists make me look really thick around the middle.

So glad it's not just me! I don't have a waist but am 5ft 7 and have a short body, unless I find dropped waist dresses I can't wear them or jumpsuits. Very annoying.

Yes, 5'11 here and bane of my life, esp as pp say Boden/top shop tall dresses with two inch longer hems and exactly same waist!

Same here. I'm 5'9". Skirts too. I often have to buy a size bigger in skirts so that they sit on my hips and are a bit longer, rather than buying the right size which would give anyone walking behind me a view of my knickers.

I also have problems with this, even though I'm only 5'7", and have been known to remove and relocate belt loops so I'm not belting a dress/cardigan around my ribcage. This of course doesn't work if there's a seam.

To some extent, it's the current style to have a higher waist. It's particularly prevalent in the "younger" shops, like H&M. It makes you look more leggy, at least.

Looking back at the 80s/90s, waists were lower, almost dropped, and we belted things at the hip, for example.

Cointreau I loved that 90s 'on the hip' waistline.

I can see what the higher seams are designed to achieve, E.g longer legs, but I can't wait for the trend to be over.

Higher end for me is Ted baker or French Connection - for something a bit special or everyday in the sales. Even they are doing it though.

High waists work really well for me, sorry!

I'm 5'3 and a bit and have a naturally high waist with wide! chunky hips. High waists sit just right on me and flare out to hide my lumpy bits .

Hate them too, especially combined with the above the knee skirts which are currently endemic (despite being continually told that "midi" is in. I would love midi to be "in" in the sense of actually on sale). I think they are meant to give a childish, colt-legged look - I am neither and looking even more short-waisted and long-legged in these garments is not going to make me so.

High waists on dresses drive me mad for all the reasons posted in 2016! Thought it was just me then I saw the post. They look awful on everyone even if they have a good figure. It’s just not where the natural waist is.

I never thought I was long waisted until I started learning to make clothes. Now I realise the I am and how badly a lot of shop-bought dresses fit me. It’s so nice to be able to make things and lengthen the body! I usually have to add on at least an inch

I've seen a few drop waisted dresses recently so fingers crossed that this hideous trend is finally dying. High waists make me look like an old fat Shirley Temple.

Yup, 5'8 and long-bodied - shirt dresses suit me but invariably send most of them back as the waist sits round my rib cage. Anything longer length just has a few inches added on the bottom rather than lengthening the body - Boden invariably does this. Occasionally they do come up with a gem - bought a beautiful linen sleeveless shirt dress from them a couple of years ago which is a perfect fit and narrows at the waist, so no bunching when it's tied. Wish they would read their reviews! Otherwise I find Cos quite good for shirt dresses. Don't like shift dresses and sadly don't have the figure for tube dresses.

WrinklesShminkles I hope you’re right that this hideous trend is coming to an end! Sadly I’ve yet to find any yet but will live in hope.

I am a well proportioned 5.1" and also find most dresses to be ridiculous high in the waist, so I can't imagine what it's like for most women. Dresses like that make me feel a combination of child-like and matronly. Not a good look.

I'm not tall, but just above average height and I find this a pain. Not empire line, and not at natural waist level, just oddly in between. It's helpful if you can see model height, when buying online, or try them on first.

They look like a little girl's party dress, I find. Most recent dress with this problem was from Oysho.
