You know that horrible smell from cheap jeans that gets in your throat..,

Washed them but they still stink.

What can I do to get rid of the smell?

Are they black by any chance?

burnishedsilver · 20/01/2016 16:15

There was a thread about this a while back. It was mostly black jeans. The conclusion was that you can't get rid of it. Some people had successfully returned the jeans to the shop saying that the smell was a fault.

If I had washed jeans and the smell was still there I would definitely take them back and ask for a refund!

pseudonymity · 20/01/2016 17:28

Is it a fish smell?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2016 17:33

Euuurghh I have just bought black jeggings, (runs upstairs to make sure they don't smell) I don't want to wash them yet , want to wear them out first.............

Whatdoidohelp · 20/01/2016 17:35

I've used dettol laundry cleanser, it can be quite pungent but it does work.

NewLife4Me · 20/01/2016 17:40

I hate this too and if you wash them twice, the smell goes steadily.
So does the colour though, just happened to a pair I bought.

Yarpyarp · 20/01/2016 20:11

They are black yes! Will try the dettol thing, thank you

If dettol works, that would make question if the smell is caused by bacteria. Yuck.

CraftyMissus · 20/01/2016 20:28

Black denim sometimes retains more dye in the fabric... Don't know why, maybe the black dye is stickier? Its the dye that causes the smell.

If the Dettol doesn't work try freezing them maybe.

Doobigetta · 20/01/2016 21:25

Is it a funny plasticky smell? I had a black pair like that, and they still smelled after a dozen washes. I ditched them in the end.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2016 21:33

Invest in some black colour wash (Tesco and Waitrose do one) there used to be a Stergene Black and a Woolite Black /Dark but I haven't seen them for years .
Dye loss is inevitable sadly

I have never had smelly jeans but will be sniffing them before purchase from now on.

ValiantMouse · 20/01/2016 23:53

They always smell sulphur-y to me. I hang mine out for a couple of days, seems to help.

alvinsmom · 20/07/2017 03:26

I found the answer to the chemical smell in new jeans today. After trying several things that did not work and hanging them outside for two weeks I still could not bring them in the house they smelled so bad. We live in the country and have a small dog, my husband was in the pantry and noticed the stuff we use for dogs that get sprayed by a skunk, so he said try it. I ADDED NATURES MIRACLE SKUNK ODOR REMOVER TO THE WASH AND IT WORKED. NOW MY JEANS ARE IN THE CLOSET.
