I need help to find a dress fit for the Oscars

My DH has just remembered to tell me that I'm invited to an award evening his work is hosting. The invitation states that attire is 1920s, 1930s or typical Oscar style. I'm now panicking about what to wear.

I'm dark haired and very pale. I tend to suit bright Jewel colours and am hourglass shaped with massive chest. Currently a size 18/20. Has anyone got any ideas? I have two weeks to find something 😱

No ideas at all but how exciting! How much is your budget? Have you got any shoes, bag, jewellery you want to wear with whatever you buy? How long is your hair and what will you do with it?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/01/2016 18:06

Oh yes, and how tall are you?

[I hope these are all the questions the real S&B experts will need answers to in order to get to work.]

CurlsLDN · 09/01/2016 18:09

I'm a busty 18, I'd be tempted to try this

(would probably find a little beaded cape or something for the shoulders)

biscuitkumquat · 09/01/2016 18:10

What about something from Coast? I was in today, and they had some really lovely long dresses that would be Oscar-esq.

CurlsLDN · 09/01/2016 18:12

Or this, in keeping with the period?

www.tkmaxx.com/view-all-womenswear/rose-grey-beaded-evening-gown/invt/53025113

(though I think any evening gown will be fine with an appropriate hairstyle and some lipstick!)

biscuitkumquat · 09/01/2016 18:13

something like this?

TouchTheFrog · 09/01/2016 18:13

Gasp all your questions made me laugh!

Right, I'm 5ft 6, I have shoulder length hair which can be up or down. I have got a lovely Vivienne Westwood clutch bag in red which never gets much of an airing. I also have a couple of pairs of Vivienne Westwood shoes in red and smoke grey. Don't have to use them but like them a lot. I have nice evening shoes and bags in a few colours which would go with most things.

Budget is flexible for the right thing but ideally around £200.

I generally suit more of a 50s style but obviously that won't work for this occasion.

Curls I like the 2nd dress you posted which I'd rose grey.

With my huge boobs I generally don't suit high necked or strapless

berry biba maxi
bargain cobalt maxi
purple with ciffon overlay
green lace
cobalt dip hem
Anything there you like?

CurlsLDN · 09/01/2016 18:19

Ooh how about something stunning from Virgos lounge? They go up to an 18

TouchTheFrog · 09/01/2016 18:20

Fauxfox I like the 1st one (berry) and last one (cobalt) 😃

OP posts:
CallieTorres · 09/01/2016 18:24

That Virgo one is the one

It's gorgeous

FauxFox · 09/01/2016 18:24

I love the Biba one too - so glam! It comes in blue if you rather but the berry is better imo Smile

TouchTheFrog · 09/01/2016 18:25

Love the virgos lounge dress, don't suit gold so it would have to be black. Suppose it would depend how fitted it was but really like it.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/01/2016 18:29

How about this, given you already have some Vivienne Westwood pieces? Not sure if it's the right style for your figure, but it's a lovely dress and comes within budget.

Dowser · 09/01/2016 18:30

Ooh you must wear the viv shoes and bag.

Do you think you could wear them with the rose grey dress.

( whether you could or not I would!)

TouchTheFrog · 09/01/2016 18:30

Think I'm going to order the Virgo one and see if I can squeeze myself into it. It's polyester so it should have some give, I can always return it if it doesn't fit. I've lost 4.5lbs this week so it can be my motivation for the next two 😇

Thank you ladies! Still open to other suggestions if anyone has any other ideas

Do like that red Viv dress Gasp but not sure it would suit my lumpy body 😃

Dowser I always try to buy things that will go with the shoes and bag because I love them. That said we barely go out these days.

Not sure it's a long dress, either! Odd that her website doesn't do what even M&S have sussed is helpful, viz show the dress on a human being and give the model's height and size, so you can get more of an idea of what it really looks like.

Dowser · 09/01/2016 19:30

What about this with the red vivs

Dowser · 09/01/2016 19:37

Anything here op. I got married in an Eliza J dress found by a lovely mumsnetter.

It was a beautiful , well constructed dress , excellent quality and it was £39 instead of £140

Dowser · 09/01/2016 19:40

Are you sure you don't suit gold? This looks like gold over dusty pink.

I think you could wow in this with the vivs

dementedma · 09/01/2016 19:40

Love that rose grey dress!!! I have a v formal do in March and am tempted by that dress....
Would it work on a five foot 7, size 14/16 with short purple hair?
Sorry for hijack!

Dowser · 09/01/2016 19:45

I think that would be perfect demented ma!

Fill your boots!
