What to wear when fat --and attempting to deal with situation--

When all is well I am an 8/10. Sadly all is not always well. Certainly not at the moment…. Have well and truly got into the Christmas spirit and am probably a 12 at best (refusing to weigh myself). Plan on donning lycra and sorting the situation, but what do you clever people recommend in terms of dressing a lardy figure? The temptation is to swathe oneself in layers and long arse-covering garments, but wonder if that might actually exacerbate the situation…. Waist not bad (and top of body). Problem is more arse and down…..

Yes size 12 is undoubtedly hideous. I would recommend a black bag for now...

Just dress what you feel comfortable in until you sort your situation out.

You've gone from an 8-10 to a 12?! F me that's horrendous weight gain (how the check you managed that just over Christmas does genuinely boggle me though)

Naturally you are now very far and must hide indoors wearing nothing but a bin bag as the world is just not ready to witness the horrific curves of your body

Do you not think its a bit rude to describe your body as fat and lardy when you are probably barely even overweight and definitely slimmer than about half the women on here?

The good news is you're not alone. I'm also a lard arse. I suggest wear whatever you like and make the most of your curves while kindly reducing your food and alcohol intake. I've resigned myself with being a fattie but I'm old.

For all the sarky comments, surely it would depend on how tall the OP is? If she's under 5ft tall she may now be overweight?

I wouldn't go out until I was skinny again. 8/10 isn't that skinny FYI.

Actually I am currently a size 12 and I consider myself fat. The extra weight is flabby and wobbly. Not a toned natural size 12.

When i'm a size 12 (which is most of the time) I do look fat and clothes look bad on me, I'm quite err, stocky but short so when I get to size 12 clothes look bad on me and nothing seems to suit me, I go really wide at the arms/hips.
Most people look perfectly not big at all St a size 12 though

I was in the same situation last year having put on a stone due to overeating and reduced exercise in a stressful period.

I'd put on weight all over, so embraced the hourglass figure I suddenly owned, it is a challenge changing your style with a change in weight, and I'm much happier back at a weight normal for me.

What I would say is don't spend loads of money on clothes if you're planning to slim back down, and if you're unhappy about your lower half then accentuate your top and slim waist. (Hate to suggest it given other threads on here recently) but what about 50's style dresses?

I realise a size 12/14 isn't massive. Plenty of people are so fat they need mobility scooters. Just saying that, for me, I feel on the large side. Is that no longer an acceptable thing to say or think?!

Totally agree it's silly to spend loads on new clothes, but equally don't to feel grim at the moment or will comfort eat.

Had utterly miserable end to the year which is what led to the over-eating I think. Sounds like we have been in the same place, Mutton.

Depends on body shape op. I have stayed pear shape but now have boobs to contend with although top half still looks relatively small so by wearing fit and slightly flare tops and dresses I can disguise my huge arse. Wearing loose fitting tops makes me look much bigger.

OP if it makes you feel any better, I was size 8-10, went up to a 12, ignored it....now trying to lose weight at size 16.

so I get how you feel but I think the dressing thing is a bit different. It sounds to me as if you are probably used to wearing stuff where you need to be thin to wear it, now you sort of want looser tops etc.

FWIW I do know how you feel. I would be bloody overjoyed to get back to a 12 but that's no one's fault but mine. Good luck in your efforts but don't worry re dressing, just relax on that front I think.

My skinny jeans are all too tight, but long checked shirts and jumper dresses/tunics are a good plan. I need to see what is lurking at the back of my wardrobe and maybe make more of an effort with manicures etc. to take my mind off it.

Buy 3 Nigella esque frocks off EBay. Wear them to death with current accessories. Make sure they're jersey or have a slight stretch so that as you return to normal weight for you they will still be ok.

I am a 16/18 at the moment and am not even slightly pissed off that you think your body at size 12 is lardy. To you it is abnormal so you are right.

What body shape are you? You sound vaguely pear shaped so a quick fix would be to widen your shoulders to match your hips... so a scarf, tops that end at your waist or below your hips, darker colours on your bottom half than your top, knee length skirts (pencil or A line), flared trousers....

It's more about balance than hiding anything.

I'm a size 14 atm - usually a 12. I feel very fat particularly my tummy - have a spare tyre.

I am about to try to lose a stone. In the meantime I think as long as you have your hair done and try to look groomed then it's all good. I live in jeans with top shop jumpers and sweats plus converse, big scarves, sparkly earrings. All my dresses are too small so I tend to wear tailored black ones for work. And big mummy pants hold the worst in

What about midi skirts? Nip in at the waist but then cover to mid calf or even longer? Or I would just embrace the winter and layer up. I feel for you actually, I hover around a 12, preferably on the 10 side but when I over indulge and move towards the 14 side I feel huge. For me, this is actually around a stone in weight gain, so quite significant. It would be more worrying if you gained it and didn't feel fat!
