How do I turn yellow straw hair into the pale / ash / almost grey hue ?!

My hair is naturally blonde but I've had it highlighted over the years. Now it resembles yellow, nothing more nothing less. I love the grey / pale tones I seem to be surrounded by, but every purple shampoo or violet tones I've used just turns my hair into shades of pink. Any recommendations ?
