Is it just me that feels like saying 'oh I look like shit.?? Well thanks for that!'

My otherwise lovely MIL speculated when DS had chickenpox whether I was coming down with it too as I looked "so tired and run down". I've had chicken pox: that's just my face nowadays.
Funny, but made me feel like crap.

minimalist000001 · 25/10/2015 21:13

I'd only say it to a very close friend and we would talk openly about what ever kept them awake. I think my friends are brilliant and I like to look after them if they need support

IguanaTail · 25/10/2015 21:16

Of course it made you feel like crap. It was a nasty thing to say. Tell her she looks like she's been run over by a truck next time. And put your head on one side with a sad smile to soften the blow.

gwen surely people can understand that you might be tired and help you out, without actually articulating that you look it?

Looking tired suggests pale/grey skin, bloodshot eyes, bags etc. Not exactly a compliment.

randomcatname · 25/10/2015 21:34

If someone tells me I look tired, I take it as carte blanche to let loose all the misery in my life. I always feel better after that. Grin

maybemyrtle · 25/10/2015 22:08

I don't mind if ppl say I look tired, I'm OK with looking better some days than others. However I'd only say it to someone else if I knew them very well and was 100% sure that they'd take it as intended, ie with care and concern.

lorelei9 · 25/10/2015 22:09

I have insomnia so look tired a lot
I don't do make up much but I got so sick of being told I look tired, I now just use concealer every day by default.

I do notice that on the rare occasion I sleep well, colleagues say "you look perky today" so I guess it really shows, but I also wish people would keep that comment to themselves.

Gwenhwyfar · 26/10/2015 19:22

"gwen surely people can understand that you might be tired and help you out, without actually articulating that you look it? "

Problem is that if you don't look tired, it could be put down to laziness.
I have permanent dark circles around my eyes, and it is upsetting if people tell me I'm tired just because of those as I have them all the time, but people who know me can tell when I'm really tired and I appreciate the sympathy.

PuppyMonkey · 26/10/2015 20:20

Had a friend who always used to say this to me when I'd dressed up and we were just about to go out for the night. Hmm

DP's SIL used to always say it to him when we met up, so he started saying: "So do you." And that soon stopped it.

IntelligentPutty · 27/10/2015 07:21

Apologies for my language, I certainly did not want to offend anyone, I won;t be using that phrase again!!

Glad I'm not completly alone in thinking that its a horrid thing to say. It really does just make me feel like "u look shit!"..

My very strange FIL recently told me so (on Friday night I think it was) I responded with.. "Oh, thanks, so nice of you to say so".
He was then later talking about Kate Middleton and said how he sometimes thinks I look very similar to her.... (I do not, really I do not). I think he was trying to dig himself back out as he could see how he had annoyed me earlier.. but really! one extreme to the other..

I suppose I just need to get over myself as well, I look as I look and we are all our own worse critics!! and if I am lounging around get some good makeup routine so I always do not look tired!!!

People say it to me but the truth is they're right I am knackered last night the baby was fidgeting about till 3 and then the older ones were up at 4 why oh why?!
The other thing feeling like such a scruff on the school run always got some kind of food rubbed in my shoulder or baby snot/sick!
The upside to it is whenever I (rarely)!do get dressed up and put make up on I feel really nice and always get compliments - but then again that's telling me I look like shit the rest of the time isn't it Grin

orlakielyimnot · 27/10/2015 08:11

I miss coming back from holiday and being told I look well, rested, etc.

MerlinToadsHellishMuttonSnuff · 27/10/2015 08:18

If someone tells me I look tired I take it as a cue to drink gallons of water. My eyes always look tired when I'm dehydrated (which is most of the time as I don't drink a lot (unless you count coffee))!
