What to put with metallic purple dress for a wedding?

vvviola · 09/10/2015 14:36

Have bought this dress for a friend's wedding www1.macys.com/shop/product/london-times-cap-sleeve-rosette-tiered-dress
Unfortunately I don't look quite so amazing in at as I am size 18 and short, but it's still lovely on me.

My instinct is to go with silver shoes/bag and a creamy coloured wrap/shrug thing (October in Ireland, I'll need something to keep me warm) and then purpley fascinator thing (it's a "hats encouraged" wedding, and I'm not a hat person).

Is that going to look dreadful? Should I go with something else?

still have to find shoes, bag and shrug which could prove tricky

Gah. Link not working. Let me see if I can attach the picture

Ooh I'd be tempted to go for a felt hat, since it's winter. Something like.... www.etsy.com/uk/listing/239093080/england-lady-elegant-hat-wool-hat-mini?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=felt%20fascinator&ref=sr_gallery_28

With silver shoes and maybe a little jacket rather than shrug (because Tbh they don't actually keep you warm, and you'll look much better if you're warm and happy than cold and miserable)

vvviola · 09/10/2015 16:31

Oooh, that hat is very very pretty. I might keep an eye out for something like that.

I suppose I could do a jacket - but I wouldn't have a clue what colour/style to go with that dress (and I'm trying to avoid black, as the bride has said she would prefer people not to wear black)

NotTodaySatan · 09/10/2015 16:38

I would go with something like this. The colour compliments the dress, it'll keep you warm and most importantly it will glam up the outfit.

Dress is perfect for an Irish wedding btw Smile

vvviola · 09/10/2015 17:58

The link only brings me to the main page NotToday. But at least it gives me an idea of what shop to start in Grin

There is a very "standard" outfit for an Irish wedding, isn't there?! The only risk is that you stray too far into something that your granny would wear, especially at my size. (You should have seen some of the dresses I tried on yesterday!)

OP posts:
NotTodaySatan · 09/10/2015 18:01

Oh I know. I panicked years ago when pregnant and ended up at my cousins wedding in a mid calf Phase Eight beaded monstrosity.

Does this link work?

vvviola · 09/10/2015 18:21

Oh yes! That's lovely. I can see that working very well.

I have a chance to get into a Coast tomorrow while DD is at netball. Shall have a look.

With silvery shoes? (Shoes are another minefield - the fine line between dressy shoes and actually being able to stand by the end of the evening Grin)

OP posts:
CurlsLDN · 10/10/2015 08:51

Yes I think that fur jacket and silver shoes would be lovely. Given the season I'd look for some simple court shoes, not fussy strappy numbers (bonus: you can put gel insoles inside)

CurlsLDN · 10/10/2015 08:58

Maybe something like this?

Or perhaps that sort of shape in a duller silver

Dowser · 10/10/2015 10:15

That would all look good.

vvviola · 10/10/2015 10:56

Excellent. Thank you all Smile I now know what I'm looking for. Although considering the weather forecast for the next couple of weeks it seems that snow boots may be a bit more suitable!

OP posts:
Verypissedoffwife · 10/10/2015 10:59

I can't help on what to wear with it as I have no style whatsoever but that's a gorgeous dress.

Verypissedoffwife · 10/10/2015 10:59

Actually that's not really a compliment is it? Grin

vvviola · 10/10/2015 13:10

The Coast shrug was a perfect colour. Unfortunately the body that goes underneath is far from perfect, so I looked way too big in it.

The search goes on, but at least I know what I'm looking for now!

OP posts:
vvviola · 16/10/2015 12:01

Eek! Still no luck. Everything I have tried comes in too close to the middle and kind of gets stuck on the flower part. I'll be wearing my hiking jacket at this rate.... Confused

OP posts:
OnlyLovers · 16/10/2015 13:23

I'd go for faux-fur too; a cape type thing, if you're having no luck with jackets/shrugs?

I'd try nude or bright yellow shoes.

Autumn2014 · 16/10/2015 14:05

Monsoon or bhs for fake fur special occasion jackets?

vvviola · 16/10/2015 14:21

Nothing suitable in Monsoon :( and we don't have BHS over here.

I think the problem is that the faux fur stuff is very bulky and that makes me look huge.

Have picked up a cream bolero to try in case I don't find anything else.

I've only got til Thursday - and next week is manic at work so I won't even manage to escape at lunch time.

OP posts:
OnlyLovers · 16/10/2015 17:25

Thinner but warm crop cardi, then? Something in an angora mix or similar would be good.

Or just get faux fur for warmth and to hell with looking 'huge' (and I bet you don't anyway).

vvviola · 16/10/2015 17:34

Oh no, I really do look huge. Even the lovely sales assistant in Coast failed in her attempt to be diplomatic about it Grin It just wasn't a good look.

But yes, a silvery grey angora cardi would be lovely. I wonder have I time before Thursday to knit one

OP posts:
vvviola · 20/10/2015 19:29

I gave up. No crop cardigans that fit, no decent faux fur shrugs. One lovely faux fur cape in M&S but only in black.

So I went for a heavy wrap and picked up silvery shoes and bag. It'll be a bit matchy-matchy which I have been told is a bit of a style crime, but it means they can be reused for other outfits (I'm thinking of something black and sparkly for Christmas time)

Think I'll look respectable in this? (Excuse the bad lighting and background)

OnlyLovers · 21/10/2015 10:17

They're lovely colours and you'll look fantastic! I hope you'll be warm enough in the wrap. Enjoy the wedding!

Horsemad · 21/10/2015 11:10

Lovely outfit but stick a thermal vest on underneath if you can! Wink

vvviola · 21/10/2015 16:05

Grin I'm hoping my "hold everything in" underwear contraption will help with the heat retention Wink

I'll be ok in the hotel, so it's just the church part that will potentially be a bit chilly. I'm sure one of my coats will look respectable enough for that if I need it'

Yes definitely go with silver.
Purple and silver. Gorgeous combination.
