Black Opium - too much for day time? / if I love that, what else might I like?

It's not very often that I find a perfume that I like and can wear as so many give me a headache.

Is it a bit too much for daytime? I am fairly sure that my hairdresser was wearing it, I didn't know what it was at the time but it didn't seem to be too much.

I have seen it recommended as an evening type perfume...

Yes it's too heavy for daytime. A lighter gourmand would be Lancome La Vie est Belle and save Black Opium for evening.

Personally I preferred the old Opium, but that's a whole other thread!

Why is it too much for daytime? Just put it on lightly.

It's not like bare shoulders before 6pm or white after labour day. It's just smelling nice.

Well I may be biased because I don't like it! It is quite rich though- coffee, patchouli, vanilla and cedar.

I just think very heavy scent in the daytime kind of inflicts it on others who can't escape i.e in the office for example.

I'm not sure I could wear it heavy enough that it would inflict others...although I do agree, when OH's aunt visits the house still smells of channel no5 the following day, it's not pleasant.

I'll look at the Lancome one, thanks for the recommendation. I may not be able to afford both atm though as I am having a complete overhaul after spending 3 of the last 9 years pregnant, I have quite a few bits that I need to start buying again now that I am starting to be able to have time to make an effort in the morning.

coffee, patchouli, vanilla and cedar

I need to smell this.

I really like 'New York' which is from M&S - lovely sweet, vanilla musky scent which I use for work and cheap as chips! It lasts all day unlike lots of the other M&S ones. I love Black Opium and also wear La vie est Belle (although this does give me a headache as is v strong!)

Chicinwellies · 06/10/2015 21:44

How funny. I LOVE black opium. And wondered the same but I only put a small amount (edp) on, and literally can't tell you how many compliments I've had. The delivery driver today even got me to buy it for him online for his wife whilst he was bringing in our new furniture. I'm usually an Alien addict but this is my new amazing favourite.

It's fine for daytime - to be honest, I don't think there really is a specific time of day for particular fragrances like there might be seasons. Just wear it lightly in the daytime, eg as a hair mist or a dab behind one ear. It's equally possible to overdo it on 'lighter' fragrances. Also to be honest La Vie Est Belle smells of nothing on me, there's light and there's non-existent!

I think the close confines with other people thing matters just as much in the evening as daytime, I hate being stuck at a table next to someone wearing strong perfume in a restaurant or theatre just as much as I do in an office or train. So it depends on circumstances rather than time of day.

There's a new EDT version of Black Opium out. It still has the coffee notes but it's got fresh notes too (I think it's a mixture of citrus and some floral but I can't remember exactly atm)
That might be more suitable for day wear??

yazzy85 · 07/10/2015 11:19

I don't think it would be too much if applied sparingly. You might also like Dior's hypnotic poision if you like this one.

hookedonamoonagedaydreem · 08/10/2015 11:13

It may have been the EDT that I tried Jaeme as with most shopping trips I was trying to keep a push chair moving back and forth while trying to shop. Am definitely going to buy some, I cannot wait all the way until Christmas.

I do remember poison, I haven't smelt that for years!
