Buying baby clothes from non UK companies

Has anyone come across a U S mail order firm called Nicki and Stella? V cute romper suits, but when I tried to buy one for my grandson, they tried to add 20% VAT. For starters a US based company not registered with HMRC cannot charge UK sales tax. But in any case children's clothes don't attract VAT. Nor does postage. I emailed them to say 'what the hell?!' They apologised and pleaded ignorance. If anyone has bought from them and had tax added, demand a refund. Watch out for this with other firms when u buy children's clothes online.
