Is it mandatory to wear jeans/boots with a chunky wrap?

[tldr]

I really want one.

I want to wear it when I work from home where I'm perpetually freezing and then keep on wearing it as I run out on the school run.

But as a generously-proportioned, plus-size, slouchy clothes lover I can't help but think I'd be looking more bag-lady-with-travel-rug than anything more aspirational.

how about a poncho? There are lots coming in for fall and they are good at disguising---- !

Would a poncho not suffer the same issue? I'd be worried about looking like circus tent...

maybe you're thinking about the old circular style? I tried on a lovely one today that was cut into a rectangular shape so the two shorter ends came down at the sides like a kimono . Actually there are several different cuts worth checking out IMO.
