How does one get the Beachy tousled I-want-that-hair hair?

I have the length, the blondeness, but just cannot get this look. Even with the actual sea salt from our beach, no amount of dog walking gives my hair this effect :0) help ?

Salt spray and a curling tong? Big barrel one?

Also which tong/curler really holds the curl ?

It's the oblong shaped ones that get a wave rather than a curl

My hairdresser revealed that gem to me recently, after years of trying with a round barrel I wondered how I was getting it so wrong !
