Share your experience of going from long hair to VERY short....

I have had long blonde hair all my life (apart from a few bob years in my 20's) until 2 months ago it was half way down my back but I got it cut to just longer than shoulder length and am so dissatisfied with it. I am mid-40's and do not have a pretty face: heart shaped, small mean mouth, large nose, lop-sided eyes so all in all not something that I should be shouting about really. Only I am really tempted by this hairstyle and while I do realise I am not miraculously going to look like Ashlee Simpson Grin I wonder would I be very exposed with this do??? I wear my hair back a lot of the time - down only when I'm not working. How have you coped with/found going from long to short. Am excited and terrified, also thinking of going for a different colour......I need to shake this old lady up and feel young-ish again!!

I did it.

In April I had below shoulder lengthy dark brown hair.

Currently sporting a bleached blonde pixie cut.

Like you, I spent most of the time tying back long hair, so why bother.

The style you chosen isn't too short actually. You will still feel the weight of hair on top.

Go for it I say. You can always grow it out again if you really hate it.

I went from bra strap length hair to hair that's about 3 inches long at its longest point. I absolutely love it. It takes about a third of the time to wash and style that it used to!

I have a great hairdresser who I trust and she showed me some photos on Pinterest of the sort of styles that would suit my hair and face. Yes it is a bit scary because it's a huge change but its also really exciting. I would say go for it Smile

LunchpackOfNotreDame · 04/09/2015 13:08

Do it! Hair grows and short hair is amazing! Do it!

I grow my hair out, get it to just past shoulders, get bored and have it lopped off again. I love having short hair but it is very high maintenance

Yes, today it was windy and I was trying to envisage this do in wind. It was not a pretty sight but I can always wear a hat on those days. I am definitely

swaying towards going for it!!!! Exciting!!

I went from bra length straight hair toba Claire Underwood crop and I stopped doing my roots so I went from brown to brown/grey mix at the same time. I love it, get loads of compliments on it and don't think I'll ever go back.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 04/09/2015 16:08

This is me before and after my crop which I did about a year ago. I love it, it's so easy to style. The only downside is it needs regular cuts to keep its shape but other than that I've no regrets. I turned 40 last year.

Mine was blonde and waist length. It's now a crop - pretty much just a grade 4 all over. Both very easy to look after!

I tried two lengths in between - a short bob and then a pixie crop with a fringe and I just could not be bothered with either of them. I've never really had to do anything to it when it was very long, and having to get it cut so often, and it looking rubbish if I didn't put goo in - it's far too much effort for me! It looked awesome for a day or two after getting cut, but I never got it to quite work.

word of warning- don't fall asleep while this is being done and tell the stylist you want to take the hair with you to use for hair attachments or other reason. My hair was sit on length and when my divorce came thru i wanted a new look. Because the salon was set up with 2 wall length mirrors, customers sitting back to back were able to see the other's reflections . This is a necessary description. I said i wanted my hair cut short around shoulder length. I was exhausted and fell asleep. Woke up looking at someone i did not recognise in the mirror. Stared and saw there was a man sitting behind me and tried to get my brain to compute that i was looking at his 1/2 inch man's haircut. My brain could not accept this and my mouth could not stop saying 'oh my god..omg...' until the woman who did this to me while i slept snapped ' would you stop saying oh my god. ' I shut up obediently -in shock-and staggered out after PAYING THE BILL?? Apparently hair cutters can get a fair price for good quality long hair.

Another one who went from boob length hair to pixie, and I would say go for it too. It's great for experimenting with different colours and cuts. MyGast you look fabulous, and younger too.

thenumberseven · 04/09/2015 21:35

MyGas Love your haircut. Really suits you.

JoyceDivision · 04/09/2015 21:41

this is my current chop here

CaoNiMao · 05/09/2015 02:33

Over the course of about 4 haircuts, I went from middle-of-the-back length hair to a Ruby Rose style. I love it! Totally liberating, somehow.

Plonkysaurus · 05/09/2015 02:43

I did it in May. Bra length to pixie because I'd just had ebloodynough.

It's taken a while to figure out how I like to style it, what products work, how often to get it trimmed etc but I really like it. Something to beware of though - unless your hair is naturally straight you will struggle to recreate that asymmetrical style. I have strong natural waves that really affect what I can do with such short hair. Despite wanting something girly and asymmetrical I've ended up with a short back and sides with a floppy tousled bit on top.

DarylDixonsDarlin · 05/09/2015 10:40

I went from bra strap length to just below ears, that was enough of a change for me. The style you've pictured above is nice, but only you can decide if it suits your face and general 'look'.

If you do go for the chop, please consider donating your cut off hair in a ponytail or plait, to an organisation like The Little Princess Trust Smile I did, and for this reason I'll never regret my haircut. I have gone for a bit longer again now, just below chin length. I get enough swish and flip to feel my hair is still there, can still tie it back for exercise but its.manageable and feels great!

Notoedike · 05/09/2015 11:21

I got a claire underwood a couple of months back, it's so much better.....suits me better, easier to style too.

JillBYeats · 05/09/2015 14:33

Can't donate hair that has been dyed (which mine has: many times) I think Daryl

You can donate dyed, hair, I did. Will try to remember where I sent mine...

Moanyjoni · 05/09/2015 16:39

I went from waist length hair to a number 4 all over about six weeks ago. Feels amazing! Very liberating.
