bought dress on impulse but I'm a bit prejudiced against it!

I bought this dress in the sale. It was the last one and 1 size down from my normal size. It seemed to fit well but is tighter on me than on the model. I really liked the way it looked but this is not my usual style at all and I'm a bit prejudiced against it because it is M&S collection! I know that's stupid, but do you think it lives up to the prejudice of being unstylish or frumpy? I am 33 and size 12 (got a 10).

I don't think it's frumpy but I think you might have to go totally glam for it to look nice. Sorry!

Rocket1982 · 28/06/2015 12:56

hmm, so do you think it's only suitable for evening wear or weddings? The one I bought is missing the belt...

I think it could look amazing depending on how you accessorised it but equally could look a bit frumpy. Tough one!

DialsMavis · 28/06/2015 12:57

I like it! Im 33 and never shop in M&S

Rocket1982 · 28/06/2015 12:59

I'd rather look amazing than frumpy! So how to accessorise it? Black? A bright colour? Gold?

I think it probably looks beautiful on you, it's really vintage looking in a great gatsby way

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/06/2015 14:47

Where do you want to wear it? With a black biker jacket, high heels and makeup, it definitely wouldn't look frumpy. My only concern would be that, if you're at all norky, it might not be flattering across the chest.

GreenHamNoeggs · 28/06/2015 16:32

Take it back. That's my advice - never having worn a single one of my M&S impulse buys Wink

FreiasBathtub · 28/06/2015 16:44

Ooh! I saw and liked this very dress in this month's Vogue! So if it is frumpy, so are they...

Lucked · 28/06/2015 17:34

I like it if I had the figure, I am too lumpy.

Good thing the belt was lost as the M&S belts that come with a garment are awful. I have bought lots from M&S over the years and the belts always go in the bin!

Karbea · 28/06/2015 17:52

I think if it were me, I'd want to give it a bit of edge and wear it with a black leather jacked and probably pointy patent black heels.

Karbea · 28/06/2015 17:59

Like this or this, kind of look.

VandaLonely · 28/06/2015 18:20

I love those black shoes in your last link Karbea.

I'm not keen on the M & S dress for me but think it could look fab if you're tall and slim.

Rocket1982 · 29/06/2015 13:53

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I love the idea of the leather jacket - don't have one yet though (compounding impulse buy). What about a denim jacket (which I do have), or is that too 90s?

I'm 5'6 and norkier than I used to be (32D-DD). It is tighter across the chest on me than the model - I still like the next lines I used to wear at 32B-C, I haven't really thought about whether high necks still work or not.

Not sure where I want to wear it - one of the problems with an impulse buy! I have an evening garden party coming up, maybe to that. Probably to a wedding at some point though there's not one on the horizon at the moment.

I got a black leather jacket in the Oasis sale (in store, rather than online) for just £60 at the weekend. Might be worth a look, if it's something you've been wanting anyway?
