If bobs are mumsy & layers are naff, then what is an ok hairstyle? Need inspiration please

I really don't like my hairstyle. The recent threads about the 'Rachel' cut have got me thinking that mine is some form of that style & I fancy a change.
I often see on here that bobs are considered mumsy & layers seem to be a no no so what hairstyles do you all have?

Mine is layered because if it's all one length it is really heavy & thick & just hangs with no shape. That's not a good look either.
I've had lots of photos taken recently & I pretty much hate my hair in every one. I got a BBH which I thought did a wonderful job in the mirror but in photos I look like I'm back in the 80's!!

Any suggestions please?

I was concerned when I had my hair cut into a bob that it would end up mumsy. There does seem to be a certain hairstyle favoured by the women around the school gates in this area - it's a bob which has layers in it, leading to an odd, two-tier effect on the hair. If I'm not very specific about my wishes, it's the bob that they try and give me when I go to the hairdressers (they did it once. I cried).

But there are lots and lots of different styles which aren't mum-hair!

Yes, that bob that's very short and graduated at the back and longer and curled under at the front? I think some people think it's edgy and maybe it was....once.

Yes, that one! My bob is one length with choppy bits around the bottom and my face (technical term). It means I can sleek it down for work and put texturising gel in it for going out. I like it, and it's much easier to deal with than the bum length hair I had cut off for it...

This style is the Mum style here with a generous smattering of giant scruffy buns and bad hair extensions.

I have really thick wavy hair. It's not the good kind of wavy either, it's the frizzy, clumpy kind. I had a short bob as a teen and looked like Dora the Explorer. So mine is boring layers and GHD'd to death.

Lon bobs are really fashionable at the moment. I don't think they're mumsy.

I agree about the long bobs, lots of celebrities seem to be going for this look too...perfect for the summer. Going to ask for this cut myself, hopefully hairdresser will cut it as asked!

I've got an Alexa Chung style haircut - long Bob long fringe. Depends what type of hair you've got but mine is fine and mainly straight/occasionally wavy and with this haircut it doesnt matter if you don't have much time to do your hair every morning as its meant to be a bit messy. Can also shove it up in a bun if it's getting on your nerves.
not that I'm lazy or anything

Mine is like the first picture that Pacific posted. It's taken about 5 years off me vs. my previous long bob, I love it.
