Day dress for royal garden party

Wtf is a day dress? I live in jeans and t-shirts. Apparently I also need a hat!!! I have mad, thick, spiky purple hair. This event is so far out of my comfort zone. I also can't do heels. What the hell can I wear that will meet the dress code, be smart and comfortable and won't make me look or feel like a tit!
Am 50, 5 foot 7, size 14. Tummy is worst feature. Legs and boobs are ok.

Well day dress, as I found out recently, just means not evening dress, so no ball gowns. But smart obviously and I think skirts/dresses need to be knee length. Would you be more comfortable in a trouser suit or smart trousers and a silky top and jacket?

I'm going soon too and wearing a floral silk pencil skirt, silk top, cropped jacket and wedge heels. Haven't chosen a hat yet but probably a big wide rimmed thing, can't do fascinators.

That sounds very glad bill do you think I could get away without a hat at all ?? Or will I be locked in the Tower?

No need for a hat. I've been to two Garden Parties and I wore a large clip but no hat.

Just dress as you would for a nice wedding. Also no need for heels as long as flats are smart.

Hi. We were there last week - good fun, hope you enjoy it.

Many people were in flat shoes which is much easier than heels on the grass. Almost every woman was wearing a hat. I felt odd beforehand but once there it was fine, as you just blend in with all the people in other hats. Smart dress or skirt and jacket - don't think I saw any women in trousers. Saw a few marks and Spencer's outfits - so it doesn't have to be too expensive. But everyone will have made an effort.

Have fun.
