What brands are good quality?

I have started updating my wardrobe and am slowly getting rid of the old charity shop finds, George and other cheaper items. Some have lasted well, most not, and I'm fed up of buying clothes from cheap places only to replace them within six months!

So where can I buy nice clothes that will last well? I live in a city with a good range of shops, but I don't really want to go straight into white company/monsoon/debenhams and buy things if they aren't amazing quality-wise as it's a lot of money for me, iyswim?

& also, what brands are good to find in TK Maxx?

For basic t-shirts and tops, I find it hard to beat American apparel. I have tops from there that are 5 years old, have been warn through two pregnancies and they still look good. No shrinkage AT ALL. H and m are also good for plain jersey tops although the fit in AA is more flattering. In fact, they are the only 2 high street shop I have bought tops from where they haven't shrunk at 30 degrees (including gap, whistles, Zara, topshop).
I seem to be the only person unimpressed with uniqlo. The tops quickly went shapeless and the leggings lasted 3 months before I put holes in them (with my very weak nails). The fleeces are good for the price though.

For dresses and skirts my best buys have been from boden, gap and whistles. French connection is good for dresses. For knitwear, all saints, whistles and Zara. I also buy a lot of knitwear from TK Maxx. Best buys have been several pringle jumpers which were fantastic quality and a steal (about £30 each).

Another vote for uniqlo. Really good quality and value. Great for boring basics like jeans, cotton tees, shirts and their Ines de la Fressange collections were brilliant.

Cos- some of their stuff is bonkers but you'll always find something in a striking shape or colour. Quality is great.

Zara for organic plain 3/4 length sleeves shirts - good body length too.
Joules - tops including shirts I have found good quality but sizing can be a challenge - usual order in two sizes and one goes back. I like the bold colours but it's not for everyone.
Boden - Breton tshirts on offer codes only. Odd top for work.

Most disappointing are White Company where prices have really increased and quality really gone downhill. Can pick up odd bargain in their sale.

Scarves by Becksondergaard - like colours , patterns and large size.
Jigsaw do some interesting pieces but usually I buy from sale.
