Colour me thick, but what's the point of BB cream?

Just that really!

It it meant to be used like a tinted moisturiser?

I bought some the other day as it says SPF30, but after wearing it in the sun for not very long (walking from bus to work, mostly in the shade!) I found I had a rather red nose! I don't get this with my usual Rimmel stay matte factor 20-something.

The BB says it can be used alone - pah - or as a base under foundation. Well, when I put foundation on top I looked like I'd just crushed up some beige slacks, added some glue and slapped it on my face. Awful awful awful.

Can anyone enlighten me without laughing at a 40yo using Rimmel ?

Dr Jart is the best I've tried - great for evening out skin tone and a bit of coverage, but won't make you look too 'done' for daytime. The spf is 40 and I find (as a very fair-skinned 40 something) that it does protect from UK sun - would perhaps use something stronger in very hot weather.

The key for BB creams to look great is to use as little as you can. Otherwise it will look cakey.

Best one for me is The Face Shop Aura CC cream.
Next is Dr. Jart.

Before this, I used Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua, Giorgo Armani Lasting Silk, and Bourjois Healthy Mix serum. But when I discovered TFS Aura, I stopped buying foundations.
