Interesting Summer Work Dress

lurkingmurking · 13/05/2015 17:21

I am going out to NYC in June for a 3 day workshop and need some good dresses. I am a wobbly size 12, pale with reddy/blonde hair and green eyes. Legs are ok but will probably wear sheer tights and definitely nothing too short.

Any ideas? I'll be sitting in a hot conference room all day so nothing too tight or restrictive.

So far I like Cos1
Cos2
too hot?

Tethers I love that green broderie one - love it.

Green one lovely. Have seen. Tiny bit too short for me.

Only issue with otherstories is that they use a lot of viscose which is terrible for creasing. And hard to wash.

Other stories was a huge disappointment. Stuff was ether HUGE and nun-sy or viscose and tight. They didn't have the green dress either Confused

I have the Cos wrap dress in black - am only 5ft 2" and large of norks but I tried it on and loved it, so I had to have it. It comes down to just mid calf length on me, maybe an inch lower perhaps.

OP I loved your first Cos dress and the wool one too. Jaeger one looked lovely also... Basically I like all your options Grin

Floisme · 15/05/2015 08:15

I like the Cos tunic and all the Jaegar ones but as others have said, I would think about layering as you'll be going form arctic to boiling all the time.

You don't say what sector you're in but in my (limited) experience, New Yorkers dress pretty conservatively for work. I was there last June; it was baking hot and there were women in suits, tights and closed-toe shoes. They may dress down for conferences but I wouldn't bank on it.

lurkingmurking · 15/05/2015 10:35

It's corporate law but on the support side. I've been a few times and they are pretty conservative but scope for being slightly interesting and I do like to up the Brit angle!

I know this sounds out there... but you could maybe visit Anthropologie in NYC and pick up something cheaper with the exchange rate. Stores for workwear are J Crew, Banana Republic etc - you can all buy in USA.

super unfortunately I'll only have about an hour to shop! That's enough time to whizz round banana republic and jcrew and grab the DC some lego!!

Tobikko
Would you be willing to post a picture of yourself in the Cos dress, pretty please? Am trying to visualise it on a little person!

lurkingmurking · 17/05/2015 14:28

Uniqlo came up trumps

navy

blue

Uniqlo dresses look nice op and like they'd do the job.

I'd still (evenings are good too as well as your hour) have a look in Anthro as well as BR etc as exchange rate is 1.57 dollars to £.

Fao schwarz right for kids stuff or American girl (near top of the rock etc) great for girls.

lurkingmurking · 18/05/2015 09:37

Unfortunately that hour includes evenings- urgh! I'll be in the office until at least 8pm and then am expected to attend drinks and dinner both nights as well as 'working lunches'.

OP - oh no that's awful but not totally unexpected either

Depending on where you're based (if you PM me and tell you I can navigate you to the stores) you could nip out in your lunch hour (if they let you have one). I'm slightly surprised they won't let you have a bit of 'downtime' to yourself though... or offer to show you a few of the sights (New Yorkers love doing this).

I am in the sort of lucky position of having a close New Yorker friend whom I've visited and vice versa since I was about 16... she now has kids, I don't... hence the American Girl stuff! If you want recs for super cute clothes and toys etc I can ask her sister who now lives/works in NYC with their son (about 5-6).

Thanks Super. This is my 6th trip and I've managed to get out of midtown once! They are total task masters.

I've got two DS so they are more than happy with lego thank goodness - more time for me to browse at speed!

Remus my phone is failing to cooperate and I can't add a photo, sorry. But you're not missing much, I'm of the "if I love it, I'll wear it (regardless of whether I actually look good in it)" school of thought.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/05/2015 16:42

Thank you for trying. :) I am a bit of that ilk too, but I also know how much of a disaster Cos dresses generally are on me.
