Belts with dresses: skinny, or the wide ones that sit high and cinch you in??

God, I'm such an old lady! I'm wearing a knee length dress to an event and don't know what style belts are in fashion anymore. Do I wear the skinny belts or the big thick elastic type ones that pull your waist in??

Thank you!! The relief! I've been wearing skinny ones! I wondered if I could get away with the tight wide ones cos they make me look thinner, oh well!

The wide belts are very Gok Wan, not a good look!

I like the wide ones too - I think it depends on the style of the dress.

I think it depends on the style too...if its a loose dress or one with a slight flare then a skinny belt will emphasise your waist...if its a 50s style/skater then a thicker belt would look better imho.

I agree it depends on style of dress, and also on you - big wide belts look wrong on smaller people, whereas they generally look better than skinny ones on me as I'm tall.

With skater dresses I always wear skinny belts.

With longer one piece longer dresses (just past the knee) I always go for a wider belt to give a more defined waist.

Do shoes and belt have to be the same colour?

No! The matchy matchy look is seriously frumpy!

Skinny belts look ridiculous on me, it's horses for courses.
