Help with jeans style (warning - unflattering pictures inside)

Hello

I'm a regular, although not on these boards as I'm neither stylish or beautiful. I look at Pinterest and fashion bloggers with a revered sense of awe but clothes don't look good on me.

It doesn't help that I'm quite overweight at the moment so I know task one is to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight and size (shamefully my DD is 2.5).

I've not brought any jeans for over four years and I'm in desperate need. My current, single pair of jeans (Next bootleg) are now very thin in the thigh and very frayed at the bottom.

I've tried on for the first time ever some skinny jeans from GAP (cement grey and pale blue) as well as an indigo pair of bootleg jeans. Pictures attached.

I'm 5"4 but long in body, short in leg. Fairly apple shaped and currently between a 14/16. The jeans pictured are all 14 and on the tight side but I am pretty determined to lose weight.

I have huge calves which I hate and even when I was a size 10 I looked ridiculous as they were exactly the same as they are now. They are very muscular and I've no idea what can be done about them.

Anyway, do all the attached look awful? I think they probably do and I don't think I can be a skinny jeans person.

What styles / brands would you suggest for me? I don't mind paying up to £50 for good ones but as I'm hopefully shrinking I would prefer cheaper for now and I'll splash out when I'm at target.

I also think you're way too hard on yourself. Add some turn ups, perhaps some more trendy sandals or cool trainers, rather than quite such a practical sturdy choice and you will perhaps feel better about yourself.

Hey I think your legs look like a very shapely set of pins! Agree with a slightly shorter cut.

Mine are like parsnips, I'm envious

I think the navy jeans look best and are quite flattering. All the jeans make your legs look shapely.

Thank you everyone, I'm definitely going through a crisis of confidence on how I look so I'm surprised but boosted by all your nice words!

I plan to hit the online shops tomorrow and will pop into Sainsburys too armed with your suggestions.

I'm also never leaving the house wearing those shoes again and I'm adding a new pair to my shopping list. What trainers go well with jeans, are converse okay at 38?

All these jeans look too long to me; hence, wrinkly knees, making you look shorter than you are. I'd suggest getting shorter leg length/petite.
Sad I know, but I never go clothes shopping without consulting:

Converse are fine, if you want to look at something different have a look at Office or Schuh for inspiration. Around here New Balance are still popular or Stan Smith trainers but you could look at Supergra as well. There are lots to choose from. Enjoy your shopping trip.

Agree with fiorentina, NB type will look better than converse, unless you have very slim legs I think they work better because a bit more substantial/ not as flat.

everythingsgoingsouth · 20/04/2015 10:16

sainsburys have some converse style plimsolls, so you could try some on with the jeans to see what they look like, before buying any.

LeoandBoosmum · 20/04/2015 16:52

The middle pair, but not bunched around your knees and the right length! You have great legs, amazing thighs!

mrsmeerkat · 20/04/2015 16:56

Definitely a darker jean looseish but not bootcut.

I do find trousers can be more flattering though and a wedge shoe or pointed flat.

PrimroseEverdeen · 20/04/2015 18:48

They all look ok on you but the second are the best.

I'm a very similar shape to you, size 12 and I look best in straight leg or skinny in a dark wash. The dark wash is really flattering and slimming. I find Gap jeans to be very nice quality.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/04/2015 18:51

I love Converse with skinnies. I tried New Balance etc on but I have skinny ankles and small feet, and they looked too heavy and cartoonish on me.
