So what jeans *am* I supposed to wear? :/

Winter is coming around again in Australia, and here comes the dreaded jeans shopping. I hate it way more than swimsuit shopping!

So...skinnies are out. Boyfriend jeans are in. Distressed denim with horizontal rips is in (according to all the 'style bloggers', anyway Confused). Plain dark-wash indigo is out. Yes? No??

But what if you look shit in boyfriend jeans? High-ish waisted skinnies were perfect for me (5'11'', size 10-12 but with hips). Boyfriend jeans just make me look fat.

What are some good jeans fits/washes for winter 2015??

koala I will be staying in my skinnies. Boyfriend jeans look terrible on me also. I think distressed will be everywhere though. Have recently bought a pair of ripped knee skinnies (witchery)

KoalaDownUnder · 13/04/2015 13:26

Oh, what are the new season Witchery ones like?

The only pair of jeans I have at the moment are Witchery...the indigo blue skinnies from last winter. (Soon to be sick of the sight of them, I'm sure!)

Also, are flares any good on a 41-year-old? Feel like I'll look as if I'm trying too hard...

coffeenut · 13/04/2015 13:44

I havent seen so many flares around to be honest koala - I'm sure they will come but not around here yet. I'm too stumpy for them anyway, but at 5'11 you should look great.

KikitheKitKat · 13/04/2015 13:49

How about wearing straights rolled up a bit? Gives the look of boyfriend jeans but with a nicer shape (imho!).

KoalaDownUnder · 13/04/2015 14:32

That's not a bad idea, Kiki...am a bit worried about the chicken-ankle factor, though. (Have world's skinniest ankles.)

Unless youre very young or work in fashion, who cares whats 'in'?

I suit mid-high rise slim fit jeans. Skinnies and bootcut and boyfriend all look shit on me.

Just buy what suits you!

ouryve · 13/04/2015 14:48

I'd stick with what you like and feel comfortable in. You're tall and slim, so can carry off a lot more styles than someone short legged and dumpy, like me. I shall be buying up all the skinnies, as they go out of fashion and get heavily discounted, because they're pretty much all that I don't look like a sack of spuds in.

slippermaiden · 13/04/2015 14:51

Wear what you damn well look good in girl!!

HellKitty · 13/04/2015 14:54

I look awful in boyfriend jeans. I'm sticking to skinnies and a couple of pairs of flares. And I'm older than you Confused

daimbardiva · 13/04/2015 16:51

I'm also 5'11'' - I tend to live in skinnies in winter then in summer wear straight legs/relaxed skinnies turned up. I'm going to be giving flares a whirl for the first time since 1997 this summer too :)

mooth · 13/04/2015 21:45

Skinnies are not out. Too many women like them. And even if they are, who cares?

HmmAnOxfordComma · 13/04/2015 21:53

Skinnies look vile on 90% of the people who wear them...if you're one of the 10%, stick with them!

m0therofdragons · 13/04/2015 21:59

Boyfriend jeans are in... hurray in fashionable again. My hips are too shapely for skinny jeans - I'm a size 12 but they just make me look like an upside down triangle. Sorry that's not helpful but I guess my point it I wear jeans I feel suit me rather than follow a fashion. Wear what looks good on you.

KoalaDownUnder · 14/04/2015 02:47

What scares me about comments like OxfordComma's (and I suspect she's right) is that I'm sure everyone thinks they're in the 10%, or they wouldn't wear them. Hope I'm not walking around looking dreadful...

HmmAnOxfordComma · 14/04/2015 07:41

I'm sure you're not, Koala, not at 5'11 and a 10-12.

I'm 5'8 and a 14, but with massive thighs. No good on me at all. But, yes, still probably better than a percentage of the people who do wear them! I stick to bootleg/flares in summer with flats, roll up straight legs in winter with boots, or just don't wear jeans at all.

weirdhamster · 14/04/2015 07:52

levi straight leg leans? pretty flattering all round

BiddyPop · 14/04/2015 09:04

Apparently, "girlfriend" is the new shape!! According to Red magazine anyway.

But I will be sticking with my dark wash skinnies (not indigo, just dark wash) as that is a shape and style that works for me.

SconessMcFloness · 14/04/2015 09:17

I'll be sticking with slim straights - I'm tall, size 12. Boyfriend's are hideous ....flares look too try hard...girlfriends look interesting but I fear they will broaden my rear considerably. I like ripped too.

burnishedsilver · 14/04/2015 11:09

Gap Girlfriend jeans are much nicer than boyfriend jeans.
Skinnies still have a place.
In the northern hemisphere is all about flares (which in many cases are just re labeled bootcut).

Twinklestein · 14/04/2015 11:35

Skinnies aren't out. People are wearing a mix of flares, skinnies and bfs. Bf's had their moment 3 years ago.

AggressiveBunting · 15/04/2015 11:20

I think skinnies are in transition. They were 'the' style, now they're totally fine and in a few years they'll be considered passé like boot cut are now but some people will still wear them. The problem is that they've done pretty much everything they can with them so it's getting a bit boring. I also think hat unless you're tall with shapely legs, they're probably not your optimal style. They are however very practical and work well with flats which is probably why they've been around so long.

Agree that GAP girlfriend are great. 7 for all mankind straight, turned up are also a good approximation. Or their Slim Cigarette are a relaxed skinny if you like a tapered ankle.

KoalaDownUnder · 15/04/2015 12:24

Actually, I tried on some 7 For All Mankind jeans a couple of years ago, and they were gorgeous, but I got sticker-shock (regret it now Sad)

OP posts:
KoalaDownUnder · 15/04/2015 12:28

The problem is, we don't have Gap here, or Next, or lots of the other brands people recommend (good old Perth) - and I don't dare buy jeans online. Too tricky to get the fit right without trying them on, and bulky/ expensive to return.

First world probs and all, but bloody annoying sometimes!

OP posts:
AggressiveBunting · 15/04/2015 12:35

Sorry- forgot you're in Oz and yes, 7 are crazy if you can't buy them from the US- Shopbop will ship but you have to pay for returns.
