Can anyone recommend a little black dress for me?

I'm a size 18, and a tad top heavy. I've been invited to a posh frocks do on Friday and nightmare of nightmares have nothing to wear. So, a 5 day starvation diet and a couple of mad shopping sprees are in order. I have no clue what style would suit me though, so if anyone else out there has gone through the same dilemma and has lived to tell the tale please help! If it helps, I have naff legs, but a pretty tattoo on the top of my back, I'm 5'5", with short -ish hair. So if anyone knows of the perfect dress for me I will send them some Spongebob Lego, as I know it's in big demand in the UK!!

how posh is posh? Black tie? white tie? cocktail dress/lounge suit?

must confess my immediate thought is to get some serious underpinning and go for something full length and strapless to show off impressive norks and tattoo.

doh, just read thread title and realised you wanted a little dress.

Monsoon has lots of dresses in this and this kind of shape that are very flattering indeed - the ruched waist bit hides a multitude of sins.

BHS

Got a lovely black dress there yesterday - should have been £28 but it was 20% off day yesterday!

I wish i could begin to describe it or link to it (BHS not online) but it is very pretty and makes me look slimmer according to DH!

Wallis have some good ones too - also one in red and another black ?

MrsBadger · 30/10/2006 11:21

aha, that first Wallis one has the flattering waist bit and is much cheaper than Monsoon!

Principles also have one.

Thanks guys
I love the Monsoon one, and the others are pretty fab too, I should have added I am in the USA so can't get any of them but now I have an idea of the styles to look out for that will help me no end!

Next dilemma: huge undies that suck it all in a la Bridget Jones, or cheesewire sexy (hahahahaha) ones in the hope that Colin Firth lookalike decides to try his luck with me??

None

PMSL I am a respectable nanny you know, and anything I get up to will no doubt get back to my bosses. So I have to make a (feeble) attempt at both modesty and chastity.

However, I would happily go nekked if Colin Firth lookalike guaranteed me a good seeing to after the Ball.

I'm a similar size and shape to you nannyk and bought this Next black stretch lace dress (top right corner). I had to get Dh to help sew it to my bra back and front to stop it gaping but it's a very flattering style and I think looked really nice in a vintage retro way
