I fancy a poncho-style thingy for those days when you don't need a coat but want something to keep the chill off.

I'm a shortarse petite size 8 so will I look like a right wally or should I go for it, and if so what style? I am the least stylish person ever so would appreciate any advice. I tend to wear leggings with tunics and knee length boots, or jeans with jumpers/tops and boots or pumps.

I really think you have to try it on. I love them but the instant I put one on I look like a fool. I don't quite know why.

Sidge · 17/03/2015 18:02

Thanks margaritas I'll have to brave the shops!

I hate shopping...

I wear a poncho every day. I have about 6 I love them. Its my uniform. They are so easy to wear and look good with everything.

AnnieMoor · 17/03/2015 18:32

Petite? Not so good with a poncho. I think they accentuate lack of stature.

ManicPixieDream · 17/03/2015 18:35

I'm also petite. I have a grey woollen poncho that I've had for a few years. I always get compliments when I wear it. It makes me feel a bit "witchy" or "art teacher" but I don't mind that Grin

I think they can look nice (unless you go for an ugly Betty one). Not sure how a rucksack handbag would work (under or over?).

I still nostalgically remember the brown wooly one my grandma got me when I was in primary 2.

LadyB49 · 17/03/2015 18:44

Not a poncho, but I wear big wraps.. brilliant.

Sidge · 17/03/2015 18:53

Thank you all. I think I might try a few on, and avoid long ones that make me look like I'm wrapped in a blanket.

I have two. One is grey and snugly, the other is a bit Clint Eastwood. I love them. They were knitted by the wives of men in jail in Bolivia, and were opened in Customs!!!!

I have a grey cable knit poncho but haven't worn it much as I never see anyone else wearing one. I put it on ebay fo £6 but didn't get any interest so thought they were just out now. Feeling like I might resurrect it and have another go at wearing it!

IfNotNowThenWhen · 17/03/2015 21:11

Are ponchos back in? I am excited now!
I had a sort of turquoise knitted silk one from max mara last time they were in. They hide a multitude.
Advice on being short and wearing one; you want something a bit drapey, rather than a chunky knit that still will stick out and make you look squat.

Dd 5 yrs is petite and rocks the pink poncho look.

Not sure I would though.

I have one I bought in Ecuador made from the wool of an alpaca which was nicknamed poncho. Its tasteful grey and black, beautifully soft and always commented upon. I am mid height and well built fat.

The one I wear at home makes me look like an extra in a stereotyped mexican drama cowboy series. I luffs it very much. But its only for home.

piemashandliquer · 18/03/2015 08:28

I too am petite, you need one that is short, not clint eastwoody. Try looking on etsy for a capelet as this is more suited to a petite frame. Look for an alpaca one and it will keep you toasty warm! They can be simple to knit yourself if you can knit as you can then make it to your size. Shop ones tend to be one size fits all which means it will swamp you! There are some excellent hand knitted ones on etsy if you are not blessed in the crafty dept.
