Hair dye disaster - any hairdressers or helpful people who can advise!!!!

I have very thick shoulder length hair which has been going very grey (more than 50% grey). It was/is naturally very dark, almost black and for years I dyed it. However in the past 6 months I have been growing it out to be more natural (the cost of maintaining my roots at the hairdressers is too much) and have had the colour stripped and some foils etc. So it was a mishmash of grey, my natural colour and some highlights.

Anyway, fast forward to tonight.

I last had some foils about 6 weeks and my hairdresser had suggested just freshening up with a semi permanent this month. But I'm financially strapped so can't justify another trip. I did a bit of research and decided that all I needed to do was freshen up the roots with a wella toner myself.

Which I did. Big mistake, I used what I thought to be a medium brown but it turned purple and took very unevenly. Hideous. After about 8 frantic washes, it had toned down to more pink tones but still looked grim. So I made an emergency dash to sainsburys. To try and tone it down I bought a clairol nice and easy 8 washes in medium ash brown as it suggested it would tone down the red. It's a slight improvement. It's more even now but the colour is still hideous. Darker but a bit aubergine-y. Hopefully with a strategic bun, I can at least face going to the office tomorrow.

But I am now stumped to know what to do next as I am worried it will look grim when I wash it next. I'm too embarrassed about going back to my normal hairdresser and i don't even know what I should book in for??? ! Should I try and strip both colours out? Is there a product I should try? Or live with it for a few weeks and then go to hairdressers. What would they even do in this situation? I don't want to go back to a permanent colour as that takes me back to square 1.

Help!!
