What colour is a versatile, everyday handbag?

Having finally reached the point of not needing a huge changing bag full of nappies, changes of clothes etc, I'm going to get myself a new bag to use for all those everyday occasions. Which colour would you go for, which will go with everything?

Thank you for the variety of responses - I was leaning towards tan and it seems to be a popular choice. I rarely wear black, so have struck that off the list and I'm pleased to see that it wasn't the unanimous response. The bag I'm looking at has a gorgeous oxblood version, but as I wears lot of red and burgundy I don't think this'll work with those colours

I have a red patent satchel, a navy tote and a tan tote - all work very well at all times of year. Black seems too heavy to me

Tan or black, though I have actually found turquoisey blue and red useful as well.

Taupe Chloe Marcie. Have forgotten that I own other bags.

I have a very dark purple bag that I use a lot. I didn't expect to, but it does go with lots of outfits.
My other go to bag is tan coloured.

Tan or navy would both go well with the colours you wear. I would use tan in summer and navy in winter

I love my teal bag, somehow seems to go with everything.

I think black, tan and brown are classic colours and go sighs writhing but I have a conker colour bag (like a maroon colour) that goes with loads a bs also just got a teal coloured one which goes with loads too

Instead of helping me come to a decision, this thread is just making my short list longer - it now includes real, purple, grey and navy as well as my original choices. I'd better get saving

Taupe - is multi seasonal and compliments a wide variety of colours.

I've got a proper hankering for a certain bag in taupe for summer but it's expensive so I'm holding out for my birthday. Fingers crossed

Cool toned taupe/mink suede one for me. I got mine from Next and use it far more than tan, black, grey and navy ones that I have. I think if you wear lots of black,grey, navy,white and stone then it works with all of this palette.

Not a bag, but i bought charcoal grey boots last year and wear them all the time because they go with everything.

I love that khaki colour Russell and Bromley does, quite unusual colour for bags. I've been thinking tan for my next bag, but khaki does go with most of my wardrobe.

My current bag is a very dark blue-black (but not navy). Sounds odd but it seems to pick up whatever shade I'm wearing so fine with navy and black and grey.

I saw it in grey in hof but decided against it because I felt it didn't close security enough for me. It's lovely quality though.

I have another mv bag in the mink colour. The colour in the main pic you've shown (against the denim) is pretty accurate. I love it.
