Is this dress appropriate for a black tie/'Casablanca' do?

I have only been to one black tie event in my life and that was a school leavers ball, so I'm a bit out of the loop in terms of what is appropriate and what isn't! Some people have said that only long will do but I can't find anything long that I like and my budget isn't large, so I am very much hoping this dress would be acceptable!

Gorgeous dress.

But... I'm not sure it's right for black tie.

Oh no! Why not, is it the length?!

Fabulous dress.....how posh a black tie do is it? It is perhaps slightly more cocktail than black tie but Women's outfits are more open to interpretation than men who kinda have to tow the sartorial line.

Hmmm, I'm guessing it'll be pretty posh. Although I know a lot of people who are going and they don't strike me as ballgown-wearing types. Clearly there is a terrible flaw in that statement though as I haven't seen any of them in a ball setting before!

I can't put my finger on it. The length and maybe the sleeves?

Ball gowns go with white tie.
Cocktail dresses go with black tie.
Looks like a fab choice

Thanks guys. I bought the dress this morning rather impulsively. Just hope I look alright in it!

I think it will be more than fine. Gorgeous dress, wish I had a reason to buy it.

I think cocktail dresses are becoming more acceptable at most events, there are still some with stricter dress codes but the attendees seem to know the code. I would resist buying a ball gown now as I wouldn't get to wear it enough. If you know someone who has been before I would ask them if ball gown is necessary.

Lovely choice. Ball gowns at black tie look a bit odd to me - it's not the Oscars!
