How do you get rid of a dark hair colour?

Help!
I've been dying my hair a red colour for about 4 years, and have found my grey roots are becoming to much to handle.
So I have decided to go back to brown, but I obviously do not want to go dark brown as I will have the same root problem, so trying for the mid brown home colouring kits, eventually gradually going lighter each year.
I'm 3 dyes in at home, and all I can see is light brown roots and the rest of hair is still red, the mid brown is not taking at all and the roots are now looking grey again, as it's so much lighter.
So what are my options? Using a hair dye stripper? Or do I need to go to a salon for a proper hair dye (something I can not afford?)

Hi Weary, if it helps, here's my veryshort thread re using Colour B4, I had a very very dark brown, almost black hair dye, I used this and it stripped it all out, then the next day i put a new dye on... hope it helps!

Here is the thread

Colour b4 remover will take out dye (colour b4 stripper will take your natural colour)

I asked almost the same question a couple of weeks ago and was recommended colour remover or colour b4 and it worked a treat, mine was jet bloody black and is now a lovely mid brown which is so much easier to hide the grey!

Scott Cornwall's Decolour Stripper should do the trick. Don't use the De colour Remover that will take the natural colour away. There are some tutorials on YouTube by Scott Cornwall. Have a look.
