What is the right length for slim trousers

I have some slim black trousers I'm going to wear for work, they are about four inches too long and I'm going to take them up. How do I get the right slightly short length to show a bit of ankle and nice shoes without looking like I'm about to go on holiday?

I'm trying to go for this effect but worried about chopping off too much and then there is no way back!

I'm rather short and not very slim - are these a good idea? It's a big thing for me to venture out of bootcut territory.

I work on just at the top of the ankle bone.
Shorten them with plenty of fabric for hem and then just tack them in place lightly. Wear them a while to make sure as mentioned by pp. When sure, trim the excess fabric and finish off.

also I would wash first in case of shrinkage.

Thanks, especially for the washing comment. Project for the weekend Grin.

Put them on inside out (after washing) so that you can pin and repin to get exactly the right length whilst looking in the mirror.
