When I am an old woman,
I shall wear purple - -
With a red hat which doesn't go,
and doesn't suit me.
And I shall whout at toddlers
who dare pass me by
And say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
and push past you in shops
and press alarm bells
andwhack you with my stick along public places,
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and nick flowers from other people's gardens
and learn to spit at you if you breastfeed in public!
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at ago,
or only bread and pickles for a week,
and hoard pens and pencils
and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry,
and pay our rent
and not swear in the street,
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner
and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me
are not too shocked and surprised
when suddenly I am old,
And start to wear purple!

Bum. I'm going out for a girly dinner tonight and was planning to wear a shortish cream canvas skirt (mid thigh) with thick black tights, flat heeled black boots which stop just below knee and a plain black tee. Am 40 and size 12. Am I mutton?

KTeepee · 18/10/2006 17:09

Oxo, not if you've got the figure to carry it off (and aren't too wrinkly )

WelshBoris · 18/10/2006 17:11

I saw a woman of around 70 the other day, wearing skinny jeans, a jewelled hip belt and a tight figure hugging top. Perfect figure, though.
People in Germany dress so well, it is really rare to see someone who has just thrown any old thing on. Fascinating to see people's outfits on the train, especially the very elegant older women.
