I can't get this tank top thing right

If I wear one with jeans and a shirt I look like a librarian trying to be trendy

If I wear one with smart trousers or a skirt I look like an office girl

Plus it makes me look like I have even less waist than I do

I bought one last year and hardly wore it at all, looks like this year is no different

Anyone want a tank top, going cheap?

when u wear it with jeans what are you wearing on your feet?

TutterIckOrTreat · 18/10/2006 07:53

bugger, have just ordered one - well, more of a knitted vest top than tank, but similar. i also have no waist. was thinking of wearing it with jeans and over a tight long sleeved t shirt.

Bozza · 18/10/2006 10:58

I generally wear them over plain tops rather than shirts.

badkarma · 18/10/2006 11:00

Mine is deep blue, and I wear a long sleeved white top under it. I pair ot with my blue jeans and brown boots. Looks ok.

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 18/10/2006 11:02

um

I thought the "librarian trying to be trendy look" was what it was all about.

ah

no

ok

I will get there in the end

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 18/10/2006 11:03

In fact, to be honestly, I was bloody relieved that everyone had finally caught up with me

hmm.

KellyKrueger1978 · 18/10/2006 11:07

I wear them with shirts, I think they need the collar or they jsut look silly tbh. I wear them with jeans or denim skirt and boots for casual, or trousers and ballet pumps for smart.

Bozza · 18/10/2006 11:14

Actually I haven't got a tank top. I just wear other short sleeved tops over long sleeved tops. I think it looks OK. But I have become addicted to layering. I must wear non-layered clothes.

Friday it was shirt dress over long sleeve top and skinny jeans and ballet pumps
Saturday it was short sleeved, v-neck top over long sleeved, round neck top with a skirt
Sunday it was a wrap dress over a vest top
Monday it was a see-through jumper over a vest top and jeans
Yesterday I had a mock layered top and black trousers on for work

So today is the first day for ages that I have not layered.

cupsnakes · 18/10/2006 11:16

but layering is very trendy.

Bozza · 18/10/2006 11:16

Dh laughs at me.

themoon666 · 18/10/2006 11:18

Layering just makes me look like I couldn't decide what to put on, so wore whole wardrobe as a compromise.

Heathcliffscathy · 18/10/2006 11:21

layering is for thin people isn't it?

not for E cup norks....

or am i wrong and would layering save my life (size 12 ish with big boobs atm)

I agree with anniemac about wardrobe going further. I wear my summer tops with a longsleeved plain and cheap top (£3 - Matalan) underneath. I tend to find they work better for me if the underneath top is a scoop neck.

themoon666 · 18/10/2006 13:22

I like the idea of getting more wear out of my wardrobe. Any ideas what I should wear under my summer dresses (the strappy kind) to make them warm enough to wear with winter boots?

TheDaVinciCod · 18/10/2006 13:32

i ahve mine on today
ds2 told me i looked liek roonie o'sullivan

TheDaVinciCod · 18/10/2006 13:33

i had a charcoal one on
a white shrit with sleeved bent up

cark rinse jeans and aBIg earrings
ph brown hgh bnoots

Gobbledispook · 18/10/2006 13:38

I wear mine with white fitted shirt and usually long dark denim skirt and brown leather boots.

I think anniemac may be right - it kind of depends on your overall look. It is a preppy, clean cut kind of look so if that's not 'you' then it probably won't look right.

That sounds lovely. I shall have to experiment

AuldAlliance · 18/10/2006 15:44

"cark rinse jeans" : eh? am I missing out on something?

FrannyandZooey · 18/10/2006 18:54

Gosh this thread had its little moment in the sun, while I was out didn't it?

Erm, I think the problem is I actually do look like a librarian and not in that geeky cool sort of way. I wish I did have a bohemian style anniemac but I think sadly not.

AuldAlliance · 18/10/2006 20:37

Jeez, I even Googled it to see what cark rinse is. Spent too long in the tropical wasteland, I have. Still have no idea, but relieved I'm not totally out of the trendy box yet again. Go on, will a charitable soul tell me what Cod meant? Dead curious...

beansontoast · 18/10/2006 20:48

i think she means dark rinse...same as dark i suppose..

franny ,i too struggled with the tank top thing in that i had a few..but didnt liek wearing them much.

i hung in there and compulsively added a few more to my collection...the winner was from whistles and had a lowish scoop neck ,a couple of buttons up the side..actually holding it together but also providing something to take the edge off the preppy ness...it was quite long and fitted with teh odd stripe to create curve.i suppose it was slightly tunicy....this was years ago mind...hope im not teasing you

i probably looked liek a sixth former...with aspirations to be a librarian.
