I need a dress for an awards dinner but don't know how smart...

Can I have opinions/suggestions please! - I'm going with DH to the British Cycling awards dinner in a few weeks (I think that's what it's called, have paid very little attention!). DH will be wearing a normal suit, this gives me little information on what to wear. He just said when I asked "oh, it'll be full of people who wear lycra a lot, they aren't a stylish group, whatever you want to wear you'll look lovely." This doesn't help me so I'm thinking of going 'safe'.

Any ideas? I'm looking for a LBD/equivalent (as my 'standby' is looking a bit past it) and could do with some suggestions!

I'm 5'0 and a size 6-8, but do have a less than perfect stomach so nothing that's too clingy.

I saw this but not sure if it'll look a bit too dressed down/cheap. Might order and return....

How about something like this? Again, I think you'd need to check the quality in real life.

I have been to a lot of awards dinners in my time and they tend to be very smart. The John Lewis dress looks perfect.

Shades, thank you, that's lovely but I'm only 5foot, midi dresses are not a good length on me.

Think I'll order that John Lewis dress and see what it looks like in the flesh.

The teal dress looks great. You can always dress it up with an evening bag and some accessories. I've been to a few awards dinners and even though they say 'black tie' (easy for the men!) the women turn up in a myriad of types of clothing. Some so short you wonder if they are off clubbing after!

Sorry though I can't really find much.

gotasecretcanyoukeepit - thank you! From those photos, I'm guessing something simple will work, the few with woman in the photos don't seem to be very 'dressy', more 'smartish dress on night out' than 'black tie'. So much easier for men!

But much more interesting for women! Wink

Sorry, didn't consider height! Sounds like the JL dress may be a winner.

Just to say, the JL dress arrived, it's very nice ! Quite abit darker than it looked in the photo. Tis a bargain, and very flattering.
