So if Tiffany, pandora etc are tacky - where could I look for a nice piece of jewellery for DDs 16th birthday?

It's not until the end of the year but I'd like to take my time choosing and work out how much I need to save up for it!

She had a leather pandora with a couple of charms which she liked when she was younger. I can't see her with Tiffany tbh and I've seen some pretty negative comments on here about it. I suppose I'd like to get her something she can keep but also something that's recognisably from a "good" jewellers. Any ideas I can start browsing?

Alex and Ani are apparently the new big thing. They're quite funky and the different charms have different meanings. Might be worth a look.

Monica Vinander, absolutely gorgeous, lots of choice and a wide price range. They also engrave for free. Some of my son's female friends "collect" the friendship bracelets.

How bad is tiffanys? I've always liked it (more to do with the film though)

Well I like Tiffanys, a lot. They do loads of different things too, so I don't see how you could write it all off as naff to be honest.
My niece and my best friends daughter both turned 18 last year, and I got them both (different) silver bracelets. They were both pretty chuffed.

I think the Links of London sweetie bracelet is a bit past it now, but having said that, if I was given one as a present, I'd still be pleased!

Alex Monroe - you can go direct to his website or John Lewis stocks some lines too. Really pretty, intricate little pieces that are whimsical and will sustain in 'classic' terms for years if not forever.

Nothing wrong with Tiffanys! Confused People just see the (classic, IMO) padlock bracelet and necklace and don't see the other stuff. It has a massive appeal to that age group too. Plenty of beautiful pieces that would work. Quite pricey but you can filter by material (eg silver) and price so you should find something on there, I'd definitely go for that. Opening a turquoise box has a fairly unbeatable appeal IMO, it's only on here that I've seen people be sniffy about it.

I do love Monica Vinader too and she has a sale on with lots of bargains I've been resisting. The Fiji bracelets are lovely.

Tiffany tacky?? Since when?! Fake tiffany yes but real tiffany, no.

I'm sure any 16 year old would love something from tiffany.

Michael kors and Marc Jacobs hugely popular with jewellery at the moment, particular watches but they do jewellery too.

Tiffany can be perceived as a bit tacky as you're really just paying for the brand name. The value of the item isn't linked to its quality.

Only certain Tiffany items become classics and thus collectable and increasing in value.. The rest is just bog standard jewellery that could be from anywhere with a fancy hallmark.

Michael kors definitely tacky! I was firmly educated on here when I asked about a bag I kinda liked.

I'm going to spend time looking round all the suggestions, thank you. I am taken with the dodo stuff but I have lots of time so keep any more suggestions coming please.

I really like the Paloma Picasso olive branch Tiffany jewellery, for me.
