Why no Dinosaur clothes for girls?

When I couldn't find Dinosaur clothes (or space, bugs, anything Science) for my daughter, I made them - but she's reached an age where she's become susceptible to marketing myths, the "this is for girls" and "this is for boys."

Which is why I was so frustrated when I came across this new range from Marks and Spencers, all licensed from the Natural History Museum - sold online in the boys category only, in store in the boys section only, and photographed in boys - only! Girls are completely excluded!

I've been thinking for months about what the long term solution is, but I'm hoping that our new campaign will be the first of many to tackle this blatant exploitation and sexism on the high street.

Please sign and share our petition. Its a start! and retailers are listening.

Marks and Spencer are presumably marking this at boys as there main customer base will be boys! I would suspect only very few girls would choose to wear these clothes!

I think a petition is a good idea.

I have noticed things changing a little bit; DD has some lovely (if expensive) tops for girls with space and rocket themes - one of them glows in the dark, and one has planets made of sequins - that I bought her for her birthday a few months back.

They hit the right note with my DD because they were obviously "for girls". My daughter doesn't really want to wear unisex clothes, she wants to wear girls' clothes that reflect her tastes.

Why make that assumption? Is there something about Dinosaurs that you need a penis to understand?! Maybe its just become a default for all things boys, when the reality is girls are just as interested in the natural world.

The thing I like about the idea of unisex is that when you get past the ideas on what girls want and what boys want, and start designing for children instead - you get much better clothing and choice! You get all colours, all themes. Girls and Boys aren't born with a set of gender norms...

My DD regularly combines dinosaur gear with tutus - she also has a super dinosaur tail from [[www.telltail.co.uk Telltails]

Stella mMcCartney did an ace dinosaur print sundress last year or the year before. Check Ebay!

Doublethecuddles · 05/01/2015 15:01

Why not just buy your daughtes the clothes if she loved dinosaurs?

natureplantar101 · 07/01/2015 06:21

agree with pp aren't you yourself gender stereotyping your daughter by not buying her the clothes she wants regardless of what section of the supermarket they are inHmm or have i missed the part where parents make decisions for there children based on their children not what a sign tell them.

Alexc1262 · 24/03/2015 14:34

I agree. My little sister would always dress herself from the boys section if she had her way.

Petition signed :)

I'm currently creating a non-gender specific childrenswear range for a brand as my final major project at university, retailers need to change!

My friend's DD wears clothes from the boy section of shops all the time - she also wears her Elsa dress a lot. Her sun suit has sharks and sting rays on it. She looks fab in it. Don't suppose her mum got it from the girls' section. What do you want, pink dinosaur t shirts?
