Fat lady in a dress. What footwear?

So I've bought a dress to wear to my family christmas do next weekend.
I never wear dresses and for the last 6 months I've worn either pyjamas, leggings & a hoody or, on about 3 occasions, leggings and a long top.
I bought this and it actually looks ok. But what can I wear on my feet?
I any wear heels, of any height, would flat loafer-y things look awful?
I have some flat, black knee length boots, would they do? They're not chunky, just plain, pointy-ish toe black leather.
I don't want to spend too much, if anything. Would the boots do?

Your dress is lovely. I think the boots would look good with it.

Germgirl · 14/12/2014 15:52

Thank you. I know it's not a posh dress but I'm fat & poor and I don't have a lot of choices :)
I'll try it on later with the boots. DH will tell me it looks lovely but he's only saying that so I don't buy more shoes.

Boots sound perfect, but you may find this thread helpful too.

I think dress looks anise and would look nice with boots! The kind that are a bit fitted around the ankle.

KarenHillavoidJimmyswarehouse · 14/12/2014 16:01

In case you DO buy new shoes, ASOS curve have 20% off everything this weekend and have some lovely wide fitting shoes. Code is DECEMBER20 if you need it.

Germgirl · 14/12/2014 16:01

Mine are skintight the whole way up! (Fat calves) :)
They're the type that are leather at the front & stretchy stuff at the back with side zips.
They're quite comfy and i think they look ok.
Thanks for the link to that thread BikeRunSki :)

Boots defintely

Germgirl · 15/12/2014 16:48

Can I throw in a curveball?
I have some shorter, biker boots, with buckles & studs & the like.
Would they be too much with the pretty dress? Am I too old & fat to get away with the dress + biker boots thing? (42, v fat)

They're a bit like this but a bit shorter & have no laces (JB boots from a couple of years ago)

I think it depends on the size of the gap between the top of the boot and bottom of the skirt. I think "shorter" boots only really work with knee-length skirts - although I have really short legs so maybe this is one of my rules rather than a general one!

AnnyMummy · 15/12/2014 17:22

I think boots would look great with the dress!

Germgirl · 15/12/2014 17:59

The dress is about two inches below the knee, the boots are high ankle length I supppse, I'm 5'6" if that makes a difference.
I'm going to have to try them on & have a look. I hate looking at myself in mirrors! :(

You will look beautiful Germ, it's a gorgeous dress

itsbetterthanabox · 15/12/2014 23:10

The dress is nice. I tried it on in plain navy the same one and it looks great. Very sexy shape on the waist, boobs and bum. I didn't buy though as it's quite expensive for a cotton dress.
I think ballet flats would look best or low heels like little t-bar ones. I think boots would look frumpy.

StarbuckGalactica · 16/12/2014 03:44

I would go for knee length boots. But I wear boots with everything!

polyhymnia · 16/12/2014 11:35

Fwiw, I'd probably find long boots a bit hot for an indoors do and go for ankle or shoe boots or pretty ballerinas.

lynniep · 16/12/2014 11:42

pretty dress - I'd wear that! I'd probably wear it with knee length boots though. I think ankle boots look weird with dresses. I wear a lot of my summer dresses through the winter and just change sandals to knee boots, black thick tights and add a cardi.

HellKitty · 16/12/2014 11:46

GG, I'm older than you and I wear biker boots with everything! I think it'd look cool in a grungy 90s type way. I think you'll look great.

Cocolate · 16/12/2014 11:46

What counts more than anything in your overall appearance is how you carry yourself. So wear your (pretty) dress and boots and know that you look as good as any super model could and do not waver from that line of thinking. Enjoy your evening!

Germgirl · 16/12/2014 13:13

Thanks ladies. I'll try it all on later.
I hate wearing dresses or anything other than scruffy clothes which cover me up but I need to make an effort, I've not been out for ages, I haven't worn makeup for about 6 months!
I shall wear my dress, one of my pairs of boots & a bit of eyeliner and I shall bloomin well enjoy myself!

Lovely dress! I think biker type boots look great with girly dresses. I always wear ankle boots with dresses in the winter. Sometimes I go for knee high, but I prefer ankle boots. If the weather is Ok I do like ballerina flats. Have a great time!
