Natural-ish hair colour that will cover grey?

The hair colour my hairdresser uses doesn't seem to be good for me About 6 or so hours after I've had it done, my scalp itches for hours. In an ideal world, I'd have something like Aveda, but its too many earth pounds. Any idea of something I could use, or get my hairdresser to use, which would be slightly better for me please? I'm probably about 60% grey. TIA.

Not sure there's much middle ground. If you are getting a reaction you might need to switch to something herbal like Khadi henna or Daniel Field's colours?

There's one called Naturtint in Holland and Barrett.

Sounds like a PPD allergy. It's really serious and dangerous to continue to dye your hair if it is- you are likely to get a full blown reaction if you continue.

Your only real option other than going natural is henna. This isn't ideal on grey as it turns a bright peachy orange and if you have patches that are greyer than others it will look patchy too. Some people react to the indigo they put in brown/red henna if they have a Ppd allergy so that's off limits if that is the issue.

Ring Daniel field co.uk and they will give you lots of advice.
They cover my grey well.
The colours do come up darker than usual.

After a couple of years of having to take antihistamine before having hi lights, I have tried Daniel Field Mail order (the genuine site I believe?) and have had absolutely no reaction - yippee .
Worth getting guidance on colour. I didn't first time and went a little too dark but it did cover grey and no itching! Have since changed colour and all good now.

How do they apply to your hair? I had similar from painting it on my scalp at a hairdressers and the last time I had this in August I had a severe reaction where my head and face swelled to look horrific.

My dermatologist is currently looking into it and believes it is a contact reaction. I'm hopeful highlights/a cap may be the answer. Could this help you?

It's definitely a localised reaction you're experiencing and this can lead to very serious consequences with repeated exposure.

Daniel Field colour made my scalp itch

Today I have cut my own hair and have just ordered a colour from Daniel Field. I can no longer justify spending ££££££££ getting my hair done at the hairdressers. I have quite a lot of grey so fingers crossed this does the trick!

Sounds exactly like the beginnings of my reaction. Be very very careful if you do have it done again

About to have second Daniel colour at the hairdressers. Like the colour but hasn't covered the grey too well round my face. Anything I can do other than leaving it on a bit longer? Thanks

Hi I use the Daniel Field dye. It needs to be applied to dry hair that has only been shampooed not conditioned. I didn't read this the first time so colour didn't take as well, I had more success after I'd read all the instructions.

Think I'm in the same boat. I resorted to antihistamines last time I used a permanent colour.

I get good coverage with henna (but I do sleep in it). It mingles in my grey just fine apart from where I have concentrations over my ears - here I get frighteningly vivid orange patches (despite using darker red shades). Have tried to tone down using Daniel Field (one of the radiant reds) with partial success. Henara do a temporary ready mixed henna in a bottle. This is quite good at taking the orange down several notches but needs repeating every week.

Why is it so hard to develop a safe option ?

Thanks all. Yes, you are right Keep I read the leaflet properly afterwards too, so hopefully second application will be a bit better. Queen I agree about the moon thing, I probably end up spending more on hair than my clothes as I can't put it on myself without making it patchy, so have to have a proffessional to do it I prefer to get someone to do it. Will bear that in mind if I change from Daniel Sergeant

My hair is down to my bra clasp at the back - will 2 bottles be enough?

Queen the customer service team at Daniel Field Mail Order are really helpful so might be best to call them re colour and quantity needed. The dye doesn't contain any peroxide so won't lighten your hair. I initially picked a colour that matched my hair (Medium ash) I think so now go for a lighter colour (light brown) that gives my hair a lovely sheen and colours my greys, look like the highlights. I used to have to take antihistamines before having highlights and have absolutely no issues with Daniel Field thankfully!

I've been using the sycamore red one. One bottle only just does my hair, which is collar-length but quite thick. So I suspect yours is a two bottle job Queenofcats. If you don't get customer service at first go, keep going. Don't know if there is a way to 'stretch' the colour, I suspect not....One I knew the colour was ok, I bought 3 together to save on postage the next time, as it is a more expensive way of doing colour, just worth it obs.

I have tried Daniel Field as my first colour when my hair grew back after chemo. It was OK. I have found with every hair colour I have tried I have needed a much lighter colour than I would have expected. I was a chestnut brown but my current hair colour is dark blonde which comes up a nice brown colour!

Naturatint here too - it covers grey hair really well and is available at Holland and Barrett.

But if your reaction is that bad, perhaps its time to think about ditching the dye.

I think Naturtint does contain PPD so if you have a PPD allergy, that might not be the best option. Not sure about Daniel Field. I tried the Daniel Field colours but they didn't really do much for me. They didn't cover grey and didn't last long.

I tried the Lush Caca Brun recently (henna) and it was ok but it's worn off. I've just ordered some henna and indigo as apparently you can get a good glossy, brown colour without too much red this way. It sounds like a bit of a faff but I'm hopeful it will cover the greys without wrecking my hair.
