Is it ok to wear a floor length dress to a wedding (as a guest)

I am invited to a wedding over Christmas. I have a stunning floor length red dress which cost £250 (was a gift) and have never had the chance to wear. Seems such a shame and I was thinking perhaps I could wear it to the Christmas wedding?

I have checked with a bridesmaid and the bride is wearing a traditional big white dress and the bridesmaids are in blue so I won't look like I am trying to be in the bridal party iykwim.

But I am still a bit self-conscious about wearing such a show-stopper dress as I normally wear something really boring that blends into the crowd!

I think it's beautiful and totally fine for a wedding. It's not like it's a strapless ball gown number.

Go for it

go for it. The person in the frilly white frock is the bride and most people should be able to work that out.

brides like people to make an effort!

Is there a dress code for guests? If it's black tie then you're fine. It also depends on the venue - it would be appropriate for somewhere grand or in a city but it would look incongruous and inappropriate in a very rustic setting.

A fake fur stole would cover it nicely for the daytime and keep you warm.

I can't think of an occasion much more suited to that dress than a winter wedding. Love the idea of a white furry stole too. G'wan do it!

That dress is gorgeous and definetly not too OTT for a christmas wedding! I say go for it

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 21/11/2014 15:31

Oh it's fab! Wear it. Perfect for a Christmas wedding.

(My dress code was 'evening wear' so loads of our guests wore long dresses and black tie, they looked lovely)

Clarabell33 · 21/11/2014 15:33

I think it's lovely and would be pleased you'd evidently made an effort and worn such a pretty dress to my wedding Smile but it is quite dramatic and I can see why pps have said it's a bit wedding dress in style... can you ask the bride?

MindReader · 21/11/2014 15:38

It's lovely.
The colour is perfect for a Christmas wedding.
Pop a sleeved shrug over the top for the daytime part.

Wear it a wedding is a fancy occasion - and it's lovely

Greengardenpixie · 22/11/2014 17:58

yes, I think they will clearly know who the bride is but will you lokk likecyou are upstaging her or trying to? I thibk its OTT for a wedding tbh. Beautiful though.

What a lovely dress! I think it looks perfect for a Christmas wedding.

One of my wedding guests wore a fabulous dress to my wedding. She probably looked better than me, but I was so pleased she had dressed up for the occasion.

I always like to make a major effort for a wedding if I were u Id go for it. I also have a wedding over the festive season and want something glitzy no ideas yet tho.
