We are going to a dinner dance thingy at an hotel for my year end do. I would love to wear a dress- last year I felt very frumpish.

I am an apple shaped size 20, about 5'3" and would prefer black. Budget is about £60.

Any suggestions, please?

Something full length? Or to the knee?
I've got a lovely empire line full length black dress in the back of my wardrobe, complete with a drapey front bit to 'hide' the tummy, it's quite boobilicious though. Not too skimming, not too frothy, it looked great if I do say so myself on me as a size 18.
I didn't like my arms, so wore it with a lacey bolero thing. Debut at debenhams as I recall.

If you like vintage style they do nice dresses here, although I found the Stella style too big but the swing style too small. They always have discount codes going on their facebook page.

THis sort of shape (another)would be most flattering, a change of colour at the waist would magnify the effect - this would be great. But yeah, it's a style you might not like.

x post a-plenty

dun1urkin · 03/11/2014 21:13

Ok, just checked debenhams and there's nothing remotely like it on there at the moment, so kindly ignore my unhelpful post GrinBlush

I'm 5'4" and wore this to a wedding recently in a size 20. Nicely fitted but skimmed over my appley bits!

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 03/11/2014 21:27

Thank you!! Some lovely ideas!

I love the first one you linked to, and the sale one, RedPoppyRed. Not too keen on the3 vintage style ones, because I have a huge belly! Thanks for looking at Debenhams, Dun1. I had also checked there.

I would prefer a knee length to full length.

Going to check the other suggestions now :)

I love the Monsoon dress, September, but it is just too pricey for my work do! Love it, though!!

this is reasonably similar to the monsoon one and in budget. There's only an 18 but the sizing is pretty generous, AFAIK.

MrsLettuce · 03/11/2014 22:31

Ooh, love that first one tethers!

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 03/11/2014 22:44

LOVE the ASOS one, tethers!

(I think you may have helped me find a dress to wear to an interview for the job I am in now! Do you remember the forest green Phase Eight wrap dress at the absurd price of about £20? So sure it was you, Tethers!)

tethersend · 03/11/2014 22:48

Oh yes, I remember! And you got the job? Brilliant, well done Smile

It's not a dress, it's a jumpsuit, but it looks lovely - stylish, sophisticated, dressy. I'm a similar size and shape and tempted to get one for a Christmas evening bash.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 04/11/2014 20:04

Yes, I have been working in that job now for 14 months, Tethers :).

Kentish, the jumpsuit is lovely, but I am too barrel shaped (and too old!).
