What to wear to a gig when you're 40?!

I'm 40 and I have a date on Sat to a Ska/reggae night in Camden. .. what on earth do I wear?! I'm usually a skinny jeans, faux fur gilet, high heel ankle boots kind of girl but I'm thinking my feet will be hurting after those couple of hours standing up... Also, thinking a normal handbag might get on the way, should I just not take one and stuff everything in my pockets? (thinking of wearing a leather jacket)

Any other advice please? A first date too so still want to look nice and make an impression, need to be moderately sexy too ;) (off the shoulder loose top maybe?! Where do I find one? )

Thank you :)

Yes to something like converse / vans instead of heels (but I am a heel wimp)
Maybe something like a very small crossbody bag where you can adjust the straps tight to your body? (better for dancing).
Like this but better: realleather.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=96 (I have seen much better ones - DD's art teacher had a fab holster type thing last parents evening - but no idea what to google)
Leather jacket: good - anything that will survive a drink being nudged onto it.

Above is just practical - the thing I forget about gigs is how you just want be comfortable & spill proof - & prob not at all how the young things do it these days. (I expect all retro-90s so tiny backpacks??)

Make sure whatever you choose to wear can be tied around the waist. I find the bad mum-dancing I do at gigs means I get very hot and want to strip off layers. The cloakroom (if there is one) inevitably has a very long queue at the end of the night. If the jacket you choose to wear has zip closure on the pockets you can probably dispense with the bag.

I wouldn't wear my leather jacket - too precious to get beer chucked at it, and too warm once indoors/heavy to hold. I'd wear a fabric biker or bomber jacket instead, I think. Off the shoulder top sounds good, or maybe a top with a low-ish back? Then again, have been looking for the latter for ages, to no avail.

I'd probably go low-ish ankle boots, rather than Converse.

Thank you all, lots of helpful advice! Will definitely take a small crossbody bag and lowish ankle boots. Might take a longish thick black jumper I have from Cos with a zip along the back instead of a jacket... easy to whip off and tie around my waist (off the shoulder thin top underneath. .. which I still have to find, might have to open a separate thread for that! )

Feeling very excited now! ! :-))

ooh look Maybe too warm though.

earplugs. Not for quality, but quantity. Normal gig volume really blows out your hearing.

Laska42 · 27/10/2014 20:05

Have a great time! i'd love to be invited to a Ska/reggae night in Camden....i'd wear black skinny jeans red converse and a great tshirt in red ( maybe boat neck)and black leather biker jacket ..

Aliensloveunderpants00 · 27/10/2014 20:16

I love that Remus but prob too hot I'm afraid... I think I need something made of jersey ...

Special Earplugs probably a good idea health-wise but imagine my date's face if I were to bring them out! I think I'll take the risk... Wink

Love the outfit Laska; might do a version of it with black ankle boots instead...
