If you were in the market for a Max Mara coat, what other brands would you be looking at?

I'm going to get a Good Coat as my Christmas/birthday present this year... would love something classic in camel from Max Mara, but what else should I look at for that sort of money (£400-£600?) Love those Canada Goose coats with (ethical) fur trimmed hoods, my neighbour has one in an almost-navy blue and it looks stunning. Ddon't know whether to go for classic tailoring or luxe parka type things... Am blonde, size 10-12 with boobs just shy of matronly Hmm

Good luck OP! I am resisting popping over to Paul Smith website to link any suggestions (I do not need a new coat. I do not need a new coat. I do not...oops!!)

I adore my Canada Goose Trillium parka. It's flattering and very warm. If you know anyone going to the States, they're around £150 cheaper there - mine was £400.

It's a very different coat to a classic wool coat though, I need both as you can't really turn up to certain events in a parka. Acquascutum, Burberry and Joseph would be worth a look also.

Hobbs is not the same price point but I've gotten amazingly good wear (as in all winter, every day to work) out of a smart berry funnel necked coat I bought in 2011. It only needs to be retired this year as it has too much tube/commuting grime for my amazing dry cleaner (Mackenzie's in Southgate, London) to fully sort out.

There are some beautiful Max Mara coats (on the website) but they seem to be a lot more than £500 - £600.

Yes it's news to me you can get a Maxmara coat for less than a grand. Unless you get lucky in an outlet...

Maxmara coats - they all seem to be £1-£2k.

Maybe the OP was referring to weekend max mara line? There are a lot of division lines under the maxmara name, but to be honest they don't look or feel as luxurious as ones from the main line the 2-2k price range,

You can find great ones in burberry, or jaeger if you want to stick to the £600 budget, or wait for sales maybe and get the camel one you want.

Well Max Mara was a bit of a non event Hmm

There are so many diffusion lines but I'm struggling to see the difference between them all other than the price tbh. Lots of diffusion lines at £500-600 and main line for £1000 or so - but I expect they are the ones that can be got at a hefty markdown in the sales/at Bicester if that's what I really wanted. But price not the real issue here.

The 'classic' coats felt too frumpy on me (I have norks, shock horror) and the cheaper, light, unstructured coats felt a bit insubstantial.

The only coats I liked were in Agnes b in Fenwicks... But they're all black and I need a camel or grey coat, NOT another black one

I have one from Armani collezioni quite similar to this here
but it is quite spendy
and another long black wool one
both are divine and you can tell they are quality
(I was lucky to get both heavily discounted however)

Maybe a personal shopper in Selfridges or similar could help you find what you're looking for?
